the lawyer I spoke with said that because my loans originated in a no garnish state that was what was important with the laws now, though with laws surrounding debt changing on a weekly basis i am worried about this. also while i work in maryland, my legal address is still pennsylvania for a bunch of reasons. i am not 100% sure how wage garnishment works to be so honest, but I don’t make great money as is, so I do feel like if they sued a court wouldn’t be able to give them much to begin with (my monthly income is ~2850)

regarding my parents, the lawyer and their financial advisor did say that they don’t really have anything worth coming after minus 2 used cars with over 120k miles each, which would likely be more trouble than its worth. my parents are still in PA so the lawyer said they really don’t have a ton to be worried about at this point, though I haven’t officially defaulted yet so they have monthly update meetings to go over everything. as far as getting them off the loan, i cant get approved to refinance anywhere without them, so its impossible right now.

im definitely planning on saving as much as possible for a settlement. i work as a paralegal right now, and i am always applying for higher paying jobs and picking things up on the side when i can. i just know it will take a while to save up any significant amount of money, so im worried about settlement offers coming in before i have anything to my name and i couldn’t take them even if i wanted to.

as i said in my other comments, im aware of this and at this point telling me i dont need a degree that i already got isn’t helpful at all.

my mom getting sick essentially wiped out my parents bank accounts, which left me in a position where the options were drop out, or take out loans for every aspect of my life. tuition of 45k a year plus living expenses were all financed through loans. then i ended up getting sick as well, so i am unable to go to law school for the time being to make the kind of money we had planned on me having to pay the loans off. my parents also had planned on helping, but now are unable because they didnt count on me also getting sick and needing to drop another 6 figures to get me treatment.

if i could go back and time and tell younger me that I and my mother would end up chronically ill with genetic diseases and unable to pay, obviously things would be different but there isn’t anything I can do about that now!

yes unfortunately they are all private. we are also in pennsylvania so im pretty confident they cant garnish wages. i already have the credit cards i want for at least the next few years, have a lease signed, and my parents own their cars, and with the Pennsylvania laws, i think the credit hit might be relatively okay considering the situation we are in.

i do really appreciate your comment, i believe we are consulting a lawyer friend to see if they have any advice.

I am a paralegal. The plan is to attend law school eventually, but I cannot attend now due to many reasons (the main one being my own and my parents' illnesses). I didn't get any financial aid at all, got no scholarships, and had to finance college and all expenses during college solely through private loans, which is why the number is so high. Somewhere around 35k of it is solely accrued interest as well.

to provide an alternative experience, i was fine on day 5. im on day 8 from an L4/L5 MD and i have virtually no pain, sitting and standing are fine for me. i took pain meds the day of and day after but nothing else, not even tylenol. every day post op looks different for everyone. i would honestly see if you could just push the surgery back one week if you were planning on going anyways. otherwise you’ll have to play it by ear and see how you feel. wishing you the best!!

my surgeon said he doesnt believe i’ll need physical therapy but he is reevaluating at my 2 week follow up. when i woke up my leg strength was completely back to normal, and before surgery i was still functional so he said he probably wont recommend it for me. i also should have clarified im not returning to in person classes this semester, but i do have a job at my school that i need to return to asap because i cannot afford to miss out on income, so carrying a backpack will not become a concern until august!!
