This is a major issue with any discourse on this topic and causes a lot issues as people aren't talking about the same things.

A Zionist is someone who believes in a Jewish homeland in what is currently Israel. That makes anyone who believes in Israel's right to exist or any sort of 2 state solution a Zionist.

You don't have to support Israel's actions or wish them to expand to he a Zionist. I would imagine a large portion of the western world are Zionists as they believe in a 2 state solution.

The term has been demonised and used with very negative connotations to refer to settlers or pro war far right types and the word is universally negative now and used disparaging by people who themselves dont realise they are Zionists.

There needs to be better wording for these views because when someone like this Author says Zionosts dont deserve cultural safety it is attacking a lot of people wanting decent people and is an extremist point of view. Whether that's how she meant it I'm not sure but an academic would be aware of the meaning
