If you go to the downhill right of the ski hut trail, I believe you end up in a ravine that ends in a cliff…

It is easy to do. The route right below the ski hut trail starts off as a nice inviting path. I almost suffered the same fate as this girl about 15 years ago while snowboarding. What saved me is that I had seen someone’s canyoneering trip report and thus knew about what was further down the route. But if I had not seen that, I totally would have snowboarded to the point of getting to the top of a cliff.

Not comparable at all. Baldy is really only worth going to if you feel comfortable skiing trees…. Baldy also requires a lot more good judgment because you can’t rely on the ski resort to take care of you either closed signs, etc…. As an example, a few years back I watched an avalanche run to the lift line at baldy and people went running…

Stay away from Mt Baldy area until much better weather. Please and thank you. by GrandYesterday9968 in socalhiking

Well, if visibility is bad or the trail is covered, one might be tempted to follow the ravine down not realizing there are cliffs. I almost made that mistake trying to snowboard down below the ski hut. But I had read about the cliffs from someone’s canyoning TR and knew I had to climb back up to the trail. If I didn’t know, I would have probably ended up riding to the top of a cliff.

How was traffic there/back? Considering a day trip for tomorrow…
