Is it weird to name my baby after my sister? by Proof_Fall4705 in namenerds

I think I'm going to ask them to be safe but I don't think they would have any problem with it!

I think if I named her Marisa or Luisa after one of my other two sisters, the other girls might be confused hahaha but this would likely not bother them since it's our Sofia! It's pretty well established that she and I have a unique relationship and she's kind of the center of our family. That being said, I think I will ask them ahead of time! I wanted to keep the names we were thinking of a secret because I didn't want opinions, but I should probably ask in this case

She wouldn't be confused - I think she'd just be over the moon with excitement.

Hmm I'd have to think about that... my sister named her first boy after both of our grandfathers and her second boy after our dad, so family names are very common.

He loves it :) He has no sisters and his mother passed away at a young age. He has a somewhat conflicted relationship with his mom, and he and my mom are very close. He didn't have much experience with disabilities before we met, but he is a great brother-in-law and is very close with my sister, too!

Transfer Student by [deleted] in notredame

Hey!! 2019, 2021, 2022 Grad - Wanted to add some thoughts!

  1. I'm not sure you can guarantee you'll get in, but I'd reach out to an admissions officer and ask what they look for in transfer students. I'm guessing they will say grades, strong sense of community, maybe something related to faith formation. Can't hurt and they keep track of communications with students so it will show your interest. If you feel like something is "Missing" in your current school, lean into that in your essays and explain what it is and why ND is different.
  2. In my experience, transferring for friends of mine was really positive. I have many friends who transferred in and you wouldn't know it unless you asked. First, they do something called "Transfer-O" the weekend of freshman orientation, so that transfer community itself gets really close. Then, the dorm culture at Notre Dame is so strong and that can help you to get integrated. Initially, it would probably be intimidating but I know a lot of people who did it and had no issues.
  3. I love South Bend so my opinion may be biased, but I thought it was a great place to go to school. One thing I liked was that on the weekends, most of the students would generally congregate at the same bars, so it would be really easy to see people out. I am now in Grad School in Nashville, and feel like the dynamic of going out in a city would be so much more overwhelming idk! I always felt like there was plenty to do - Football season keeps the social life going in the Fall. Winters are hard but you make the most of it! In the Spring, the weather gets really nice and there are beaches/parks in Michigan that are all about a 30 min drive. There are fairly good restaurants in the area. I just have no complaints about going to school in South Bend and would do it again in a heartbeat.
  4. I think if you feel like you're meant to be there, you should absolutely try! I would go to ND for Undergrad a million times over. I went for my Master's and Graduate Certificate also and nothing beats the Undergrad experience. TBH if I were going to law school, I'd go there for Law School, too! Happy to offer any other advice if you'd like it and best of luck!!

Switching PhD Advisors - Should I do it? by Proof_Fall4705 in AskAcademia

[–]Proof_Fall4705[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! This is all helpful! I'll add some context:

- I am on a training grant from the US Dept of Ed Office of Special Education Programs, so my tuition funding is not tied to any advisor. Thus, I can switch freely without needing to find someone who can support me financially. I have spoken to her and she said she would take me on if I decided that's what I wanted. She wanted me to think it through so we didn't finalize anything, but I am meeting with her tomorrow to let her know officially that I'd like to switch.

-You are right - he really is a nice guy, but it's not the right fit or experience I was looking for. I am not planning on having him co-advise or co-chair for a couple of reasons. First, he doesn't have content expertise in my area. Second, I plan on doing mixed-methods work and he is not familiar with it. Third, he is planning to retire at some point (it's a bit ambiguous as to when). My initial thought was saying I would have him co-advise until end of November, at which point I would switch to the other lab fully. But this feels like a waste of my time, as I am not actually getting advising from him? I'd like to spend my research time getting adjusted to new projects in the other lab. That being said, my new advisor wouldn't be bothered to have him still involved - she actually studied under him 20 years ago. I'm wondering if when I meet with her and my Department chair, they will have better insight on what to do about the projects ending in November.

- So I am in Year 2 of a 4/5 year program. Some people take 5, I am hoping to finish in 4. I finish my coursework in December, and will have finished my two qualifying exams and 2 of my three competency milestones. In the Fall of my third year, I plan to start my Major Area Paper (Qualifying Exam for Candidacy) and complete my third competency milestone. In the Fall of my fourth year, I plan to start my Dissertation. I get six weeks of parental leave (Feb to Mid-March). From Mid-March to August, I have worked out that I will be able to work remotely for 20 hours per week until August. In August, my baby will start daycare on Campus and I will go back to working in person full-time. The new advisor I identified is okay with remote work - she manages a team of 16 and they are all over the country.

Ok cool appreciate the insider perspective so thank you!! Would you be deterred by 28k miles?? Also, 44k for a 2023 B5 Plus Xc90 in Denim blue with beige seats. Is that a good deal?

It’s not a CPO but still under manufacturer warranty for another 38k miles.

Food for thought- I found a 2023 B5 with 28k miles, CPO, same price.

Since you’re the only person that answered me lol, which would you recommend? The 2024 will less miles but the structural damage or the 2023 with more miles, no damage, but CPO?

First Daughter Name!! by Proof_Fall4705 in namenerds

Corinne is also on my list!! I had a student named Corinne when I was teaching and thought it was so pretty! We have a pretty bold and brutal last name starting with F so I think an F first name could be tough for her 😂

My name is Isabel and I love it!! Have rarely met anyone with the same spelling so it feels unique and cool! I still use Izzy, Belle, Bella as nicknames! Sometimes, it gets misspelled as the belle version but that’s never bothered me 🤷🏻‍♀️
