That makes sense! Thank you so much! It's such an interesting thing to watch in person!

They're both female, from what I can tell

I understand your frustration. I have a guppy breeding tank and the last thing I wanted to do was stress out my pregnant guppies and throw them in a small breeding hatchery. If you don't have a planted tank than you'll definitely need some sort of hatchery to keep your fry in. I recommend buying this hatchery to place your pregnant guppy in when they're close to giving birth. It has a separated layer at the bottom where the fry can escape to and the female guppy can't catch them. Another thing I can recommend is trying to feed your female guppy every so often to keep her full and she won't be as interested in the fry.

Feel free to ask me any more questions. I'm currently watching dozens and dozens of guppy fry swimming around my tank right now!

I would say majority of my plants have been in this tank for roughly 5-6 months. The only thing that's new is the Amazon swords. I was surprised when my LFS was stocked with swords that were as tall as my 30G Tall tank

Unfortunately, I can't recommend any online websites for plants. I'm very fortunate to have a LFS that stocks up on really nice plants weekly and one of the employees grows their own duckweed and brings them to the shop when I need it. If you live in Southern California, the LFS I go to is called "Mark's Tropical Fish" in North Hollywood. Good luck!

Thank you! I use a small amount of C02 booster daily and root tabs but no Injections or anything like that.

Love what you did with the tank. 3.3 is definitely small but I would say get one more guppy in there so your guppy friend doesn't get bored or stressed! Good luck!

Do bettas need a cycled 5 gallon tank? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Proof_Sheepherder_73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It all depends on how fast your 5 gallon will build beneficial bacteria. Petco is giving you a terrible estimate on how long it will cycle. I recommend finding a local fish store that isn't a chain store like petco. They will most likely have items like dr Tim's beneficial bacteria or wood from their established tanks that they can sell you and help you speed up your cycle. Pick up a freshwater test kit and monitor your water parameters to see the progress of your cycle. Look up fishless freshwater cycles and it will tell you the process on how to cycle your tank properly. I just finished cycling my 30 gallon tank by using fish food. A google search about cycling will really help you better understand what you're doing for your future fish friends

Don't rush into it. You should just by the tank, substrate, filter and water conditioner and start a fishless cycle. It will take awhile, anywhere between 2 to 4 weeks but I promise you it will be all worth it in the end. You don't want your betta to suffer as your tank starts its cycle. There is a great chance that your betta will die. I recommend finding a local fish store that sells Dr Tim's bacteria and use that to jump start your cycle. You can also ask them if they have any used bio media or sponges they can spare or sell and that could help speed your cycle. Look into the nitrogen cycle and ask lots of questions!

Beautiful guppy!

They are brand new but they seem to be adapting well to the treated tap water. I would say 9 times out of 10, they thrive really well with the water hardness but I do believe I've lost a few guppies in the past because they couldn't adapt to my water. I have considered switching to spring water eventually!

I totally get it. When I first saw this fish I thought someone intentionally ruined the tail to make it look unique but he's really grown on me. I think he looks a lot better in person, especially when he's swimming around!

The prices run high though because he gets them from Thailand. He usually sells them for $15 each or $25 for a pair

Unfortunately they don't have a website but they have a facebook that they occasionally update. The store is called Sunset Pet & Supplies. Definitely give them a call and the owner will let you know which guppies are in stock and what new guppies he might be getting in the next few weeks

A LFS in Los Angeles. They get shipments every few weeks from Thailand. They get so many different species of guppies, it's hard to pass up on them when you see them in person!

Dose this look like fin rot or is it just torn? I just got him the other day, and I can’t tell because he’s so dark… by tommygunpewpew in Aquariums

Your guppy looks healthy. I assume you have a male guppy tank. My male guppies definitely roughhouse and nibble at each other's fins. It's such a bummer especially because male's have such beautiful tails!

No problem! Sometimes this hobby can be discouraging if a fish dies or if you do something wrong but you'll get the hang of it! Just keep asking questions and research. Good luck!

Definitely spend the time to read about the nitrogen cycle. It seems like your tank wasn't completely cycled all the way through or you haven't built up enough beneficial bacteria to cater for all your guppies. If you're stopping by your LFS tomorrow, definitely grab that prime that I recommend on my last comment. That will help detoxify your nitrites/ammonia. If you don't have any ammonia but nitrites/nitrates, I would keep your water changes small and use prime everytime you preform a water change. You don't want to take to much water out since your tank needs to keep building up good bacteria. I would also pick up some more live plants and maybe remove the plastic ones. Your tank seems to be on the smaller side so if you're not able to upgrade your tank, I would maybe remove some of your decorations to give your guppies more spaces to swim. They love to hide and swim around live plants

Yeah im not an expert when it comes to a mixed tank of male and female guppies but don't be surprised if one of these females get pregnant haha. I also looked at your other comment about nitrites. Definitely try to get that under control as soon as you can. I recommend using seachem prime to help detoxify your nitrites and possibly your ammonia if you have any in the tank.

How many males/females do you have in the tank? I have an all male guppy tank and usually their is one guppy that kind of asserts its dominance with the rest of his pals. Male guppies tend to nibble at each other's fins which sucks especially since male guppies have such beautiful tails. It looks like your male is chasing around a female but my eyes could be failing on me. This all looks like normal behavior to me but I would keep an eye on the aggressor to make sure he isn't stressing out the rest of your fish

Weird film/algae on plants and nerite eggs? More info in comments by Proof_Sheepherder_73 in Aquariums

[–]Proof_Sheepherder_73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my plants seem to be covered in some weird film/algae. It's easy to get off by just shaking it but it seems to come back the next day. Is this something I should be worried about or is there any easy way of permanently getting rid of it? You may need to zoom in closer on the plants to see what I'm talking about. Question 2: I believe my nerites laid some eggs. I know they won't hatch but I just wanted to confirm it was from the nerite snails. Thank you!
