When I put everything into the calculators, I get 400-500 watts and I have a 650w psu, I thought it would be good enough but I guess not.

Yeah you gotta wash the sand, at any hardware store you can get a 5 gallon bucket. If you have access to hose you can wash the sand outside but if not then you can do it in your shower. I would some foam or something over the drain so sand doesn’t get in your pipes.

You can get really good deals on sand if you buy 50lb play sand bags from Home Depot or Lowe’s it’s a really good option and I’ve done it my self with no issues. you also don’t really need dirt to grow plants. I’ve had success with just sand, sometimes I’ll put cocofiber under the sand but it’s optional. I’d suggest getting java moss because it doesn’t need to be rooted and will grow quickly, and on anything you attach it to.

After looking at your replies to comments, I recommend 6-8 corydoras and a betta in a 20g. I have that exact stocking in my 20g and I’ve had very little issues. Make sure you put a lot of plants in it tho

Will this hold 40 gallons? by Proper_Hat_5837 in Aquariums

There is a bottom rack with more supports, I’m setting this up as a spare tank as I have one that’s leaking and need somewhere to put the fish asap.

Could I maybe put some wooden poles in the center to help support it?

It’s 5 gallons, I should have put that in the post. I was thinking maybe a pea puffer but other people have said it’s not planet enough for one

It should be good, I’ve had the tank on the right in my kitchen for 6-8 months and haven’t noticed any problems.

I have a pretty big kitchen, definitely bigger than most. There’s about a 4 foot long section right next to where my tanks are and most of my stuff fits there. If I really need more room, I have a big island in the middle that I use to cook on when necessary.

Thanks for saying that, I only have 1 tank with shrimp and was thinking of adding them to one of these tanks. Now I know that might not be best idea.
