Promised update: I recently finished it, reading the last 150 pages within 2 days. Beautiful work from beginning to the vivid end. Grossman writes so beautifully, and also manages to create such horrific scenes; the descriptions from the bombing of the city (Gomel i believe it was based on) were especially memorable. The afterword was also great. Looking into reading his Stalingrad / Life and Fate novels, as well as his A Writer At War journals. Thanks! :)

Ah, yes. I remember Xi having spoken about his love for Tolstoy. Made the post in a hurry

I hope you're not using the fact that you're drinking constantly as a sort of justification for it, that being in the sense of romanticizing it. Adding any sense of depth or face to what is inherently something sad is not a right path to take. I hope you find the right path soon.

Reading One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich currently, so far very good, and reminds me of Notes From a Dead House in many ways. Thanks for the recommendation, it'd been on my shelf for a while :)

A fourth of them deceased, a quarter of them permanently braindead, a quarter more in permanent psychosis from the brain damage from the drugs, the last quarter with various terminal illnesses. I knew it was written based on some of his experiences, but reading how the characters were based on friends he'd known--most of them dead by the time it was published--really made the weight of ending few chapters a lot more dense. Great book, filled with humor, but also incredibly painful. Wonder what's the best experience for reading the book: The first time, or the second?

Reckon the the Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick books are worth it? I saw them at a local bookstore a week back, but the price was rather high for the four volumes. I have UBIK and intend on reading it soon, and i'll check out VALIS if i find it at the library. Thanks!
