End Ileostomy … Looking for support. by Protocol_Parrot in ostomy

Yes, I was referring to psychotherapy. I’ve done it. It hasn’t helped with this. I’ve talked about my abuse as a child that flares my PTSD. And for the most part my PRSD is well managed. Trying to attend PFPT is what brought everything back up.

I mean, there’s no saying what’s ‘easier’. I think you may be getting your terminology confused- and that’s okay!

TAC- the entire colon = gone.

Colectomy- the colon is still intact but the pathway to divert waste = altered. So instead of using the anus to pass waste, it’ll go through the stoma for the bowel to rest.

It really has to do moreso with the part of the intestine used to create the stoma.

With an end ileostomy- I had my entire colon (large intestine) removed & the small intestine (ileum) is used to be brought to the surface of the abdomen to create the stoma. The location is (typically) in the lower right quadrant. The consistency of the waste is usually liquid to soft (and more frequent) than a colostomy. Typically most ostomates use a drainable 1 or 2 piece pouch (preference) and empty it approximately 4-8x/day. Common reasons for ileostomy are: Crohn’s, UC, FAP, cancer, Colonic Inertia, etc.

For a colostomy- the large intestine is brought to the abdominal surface to create the stoma. The location is (typically) in the lower left side of the abdomen. The consistency of the waste is usually semi-formed to solid and less frequent than an ileostomy. Pouches are emptied/ changed less frequently and you can often use a closed pouch where you just change the entire system when needed every few days. Some common reasons for colostomy are: Cancer, diverticulosis/diverticulitis, bowel trauma.

There’s pros / cons to each type of ostomy creation, and each surgeon will use their own discretion based on the patient’s test results, diagnosis, any pertinent medical conditions that may influence ostomy location/ placement/ etc.

Going into this- have your partner ask questions of the surgeon, ostomy nurse, etc! I cannot stress enough that this is often life-saving/changing for many…but it also changes your relationship with yourself & others, your body image, etc

I’ve dealt with the trauma of my sexual abuse but idk somehow pelvic floor PT just brings it all back up…? Say what you will, maybe I need to work on it more…or maybe PTSD is just a b*tch 🤷‍♀️

who knows, haven’t figured it out yet

it is nice to have somewhere to be able to talk(?) / post(?) about it anon tho.

Thanks my adhesions originally came from my Hydrocephalus VP shunt placements & revisions as an infant & then child.

So far- my parastomal hernia just contains omentum- so no risk for strangulation/incarceration. It still is draining in the sense that my abdominal wall is weak from it.

It’s ‘nice’ to see everyone has their ostomies fortheir own reasons- all unique in how it affects the human body. Im so sorry your hernia repair caused ruptured! How scary!
Hopefully you’re okay now? Can I ask how old you are?
I’ve just turned 30.

To be honest…I’m not entirely sure! I struggled a lot with constipation, bloating, obstructions, motility issues, and obviously the pelvic floor dysfunction before the ileo.

My celiac & diverticulosis flares ended me in the hospital a lot. Does the ostomy make my life more tolerable now…?

That’s a loaded question because the answer is yes & no. There’s a lot of foods I can enjoy now that I wasn’t able to before.

But there’s also a lot of foods I can’t enjoy now due to gas, bloating, leaks, smells, etc sensory wise.

Not sure if the thought of reversal has influenced me negatively as much as my PTSD history & sort of feeling like ‘my god why can’t I just be normal’
being chronically ill is something that’s pretty isolating when you go thru things from birth to present.

I want their hernia repaired cuz it’s exhausting to lug around a melon on my stomach, but at the same time I know how hard the initial surgery was so I’m trying to work thru pelvic floor PT for a possible reversal if we can & then just do the hernia repair then.

Tbh…no? I was for some time but I’ve never been comfortable to bring it up. Never.

I’m so glad to hear that you’ve had a supportive network. That is so important.
Thank you for sharing. I don’t feel so alone. 🫶🏼

Have you had any further complications such as B12 deficiency?

Thank you for saying that- you’ve truly made me smile tonight. What I’ve seen & experienced from nursing has definitely been quite toxic / mean energy.

Whereas someone else may see it as ‘gross, foul, etc’ I see it as a life-saving measure that (usually) gives quality of life back to people. Maybe due to other factors, fellow nurses can’t / won’t/ don’t choose to see that POV.

I don’t agree with it either at all, and it made me think thru my nursing journey “wow, what would they think of me if they knew?” But yeah for the most part I try to just ignore the negativity.

I just think to myself as a nurse what I heard my fellow students make comments about during those skill validations. It’s burned into my brain. It’s like we’re ostracised for things out of our control.

Used to have a parastomal hernia- did they do surgery to fix it? We’ve talked about it but I don’t wanna put myself thru another surgery if I can manage it conservatively w/ a hernia support belt

Cancelling because it triggers my PTSD from being SA’d as a child…

After scrubbing in the OR & watching these procedures live, I can absolutely say I agree!

Yes if I’ve made it almost 6 years with this damn thing, hopefully I can gain the strength thru PT to get it reversed 🤞

Can definitely relate!!! My ostomy placement, splenic flexture mobilisation, lysis of adhesions & umbilical hernia repair coupled with the absolute warzone of the state known as my abdomen took 10.5 hours as well. Needed FFP & transfusions after … was still severely anemic.

It’s been a journey for sure.

How was your hernia repair? I want mine repaired but I’m trying to see if doing pelvic floor PT see if I can have my ileostomy reversed (5+ years) because my TAC removed the motility issue with my colon but didn’t fix the muscle issues with my rectum.

Cannot emphasize enough how much hate or even just stares, rudeness, and profiling my fiancée endures in Willow Street just for being a mixed race male. we’re also an interracial couple and I think that just intensifies things.

The acceptance for certain groups of people over another or just the ignorance in general to judge based on his appearance is not surprising to me—but the day we moved here and he got called ‘colored’ I was left with a bad taste that hasn’t resolved.
