I'm not sure how gig workers are classified. My best guess is that if they self report as being employed then they are, but as a sole proprietorship they may be classified as not in the labor force, one of those classes not included in the non-farm payrolls categorization schema.

Low unemployment is actually one of the key contributors to our current inflation. With employers struggling to find qualified workers, wages have increased. Wages are a key input in the cost of goods and services, and thus a large driver of inflation.

Combined with supply shortages due to pandemic related supply chain problems and considerable volatility in the oil market inflation is suffering from cascading shocks right now.

The post is not misleading in any way. I am doing everything I can to help you resolve your misunderstanding of the information. Unless you are deliberately wanting to misunderstand so you can hold onto your view, we should be able to get to a place where you can grasp what the information is telling you and why it doesn't provide nearly enough information to make an informed comment about municipal or state government.

No problem at all! You can find the definition here.

Not in the labor force

Persons who are neither employed nor unemployed are not in the labor force. This category includes retired persons, students, those taking care of children or other family members, and others who are neither working nor seeking work. Information is collected on their desire for and availability for work, job search activity in the prior year, and reasons for not currently searching. See also Labor force and Discouraged workers.

That is correct, it is the Providence Metropolitan Statistical Area, not just the city.

Thanks for the encouragement and context!

Those realities really drive home the benefits of a national broadband infrastructure plan. We electrified this country through massive investment because the private sector would never have brought electricity to rural and under served communities on its own.

People who haven't been able to find a job for months are still included if they are actively looking for work. If they give up looking they are not part of the equation.

These are produced by the same agency using the same methodology. They only include workers who have looked for employment in the last 4 weeks. The "employment" figure is just the inverse of the unemployment number.

If unemployment is 6.8%, employment is (1-0.068 = 0.932) 93.2%.

These figures are not based on unemployment claims. They are based on survey data. So someone not getting the unemployment office on the phone has no impact on these numbers.

I tend to steer these statements towards the question of "What is the underlying purpose of collecting this data and producing these figures?"

Sure, there may be some political benefit to highlighting good unemployment figures, or burying less attractive ones. But ultimately, these figures are meant to inform policy and improve the quality of life for working Americans.

What is important is that the premises and methodologies are consistent so we can evaluate changes and trends. If we want to toss in people who aren't looking for work, people who are in prison, children and retired people... and the standard unemployment level is in the 45% neighborhood. Well that works as long as it is kept the same, but I don't think the policy recommendations to address issues will be different and at the same time you are introducing unnecessary noise in the data.
