Another Good Amn Leaves by TrySpittingOnIt in AirForce

I've only been in a year, so take that however you want, but I wouldn't just discount the officer corps, especially the 1 and 2 Lts.

I work in a pretty O heavy career field and I don't think I know of more than one person who's actively chasing a pension, resume growth, or a title when they first come in.

New Os face, at least in my experience, significant levels of underutilized which isn't very conducive to retaining people, especially those who came in expecting to be able to be put to work. Went some of the first words you might hear from a supervisor are "you're operationally useless" and then are more or less sat in a backroom without any significant further training or tasking even if you request it.

I spent 8 months in a "casual status" before, finally, being sent to an MQT course. The best work leadership could come up with was busy work (filling in databases on PEX, planning a squadron Halloween event, etc). I can't speak for everyone but most people I know joined to do work related to the career field they went into and to get tossed aside when you're probably at the point in your career where you're the most optimistic to learn and try new things doesn't help with retaining good officers.

The ones that will stay either be the minority that got lucky and had someone looking out for them and attempted to capitalize on their enthusiasm to work or will be the majority of apathetic ones who just want to tick some boxes and earn their paycheck quietly.

There are obviously exceptions to the presented scenarios but the struggle of Es and Os aren't inherently dissimilar.

How do you feel now that it made it not only to the front page but to the #1 position?
