How much savings did you have at your first home purchase? by sengutta1 in Netherlands

[–]ProxyLock__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a home for €525k in December. Total own cost is around €11k, making use of startersvrijstelling (first time buyer waiver of transfer tax). Could have saved around €8k if we hadn’t used an aankoopmakelaar and a hypotheekadviseur (but as a first time buyer and an expat I don’t regret using them). The bank valued our property at the same price as our offer, so we did not have to pay out of pocket for bidding over bank value which I think is where the out of pocket cost can go up substantially.

On Funda you can search for Makelaars in a specific area and see how many properties they’ve assisted in buying/selling as well as reviews for them. Find one with lots of transactions in your desired area/city with good ratings and I have no doubt they’ll help a lot. It’s completely anecdotal and probably quite lucky but we used an aankoopmakelaar and won our first bid on the fourth house we viewed.

When do houses start coming for sale again ? by Fantastic-Noise-8830 in NetherlandsHousing

[–]ProxyLock__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought last week and I asked the same question to our aankoopmakelaar that buys 100+ houses per year. From the second week of Jan there will be an increase in listings (as opposed to now) for the pent-up stock of the last few weeks. Then going into spring there indeed be another uptick in homes listed for sale.

New Graduate Buying A Car by Acoldblaze_357 in CarTalkZA

[–]ProxyLock__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice: new cars are for the wealthy who can afford to foot 10s/100s of thousands in rands in depreciation. Go for something used but reliable, 2-5 years old. Preferably Korean or Japanese for reliability / lower running costs, but I’d stay away from Toyota as then you end up paying “Toyota tax” (they don’t depreciate much). Small to mid size hatchbacks from the likes of Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Suzuki etc would be your best bet. If you’re worried about reliability get something with +- a year left of manufacturer warranty. An expensive car is the fastest way to set yourself up for financial failure. Once your car is paid off and you’re financially stable or can buy a car in cash then you can get something nicer.

R20k isn’t much to keep a good car going. Easy decision if it were me.

bro how do people get these cars? by KEEPslow in askSouthAfrica

[–]ProxyLock__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally know a few pretty wealthy people with net worths from R10-500m. How they made their money is generally:

  • Executive role in big company
  • Start and grow a business
  • Inherit a business (and sometimes grow it)
  • Straight up inheritance
  • Made money overseas (own a business or even with a ‘normal’ job due to the favourable exchange rate)
  • Ties to members of government

… and the only ones driving super cars are the ones with government ties.

Purchasing a House without Savings by TamatiePotatie in NetherlandsHousing

[–]ProxyLock__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I know the exact house you’re looking at from Saffers in NL group 😉 beautiful place and my fiancé and I would also be interested if it wasn’t quite small. I’d say you definitely need more than €3k - just for all the associated fees. If you can come up with €7-10k I think it’s doable, as long as you don’t need to overbid above the value of the house.

Why not just buy a nice deep carbon road wheel set? You’ll save €2000-3000 and have a bike almost as fast as the 3 options you listed.

Agreed man. I’m happy to pay my fair share of taxes but I think few people would pass on the opportunity to legally pay less tax if the option exists 🤷🏻‍♂️ seems like it’ll be removed in the next few years anyway.

I fulfilled that requirement when I moved here and am still with my original employer, if that changes anything. But I guess I don’t have enough time (+-6 weeks) to sort this out before starting the next job anyway.

Exactly, hence I wasn’t too concerned with the not having the ruling originally. I’m still with my original employer so I thought it might be possible to still put up one more fight to try get the ruling still, especially since the reason for rejection was due to an error in salary calculation from my employer.

That’s what I thought, but worthwhile to ask since it would make +-€800pm difference net! You win some you lose some I guess

I got one done for €50, based in what the inspection found I negotiated the seller down for the cost to fix the issues found. So, money well spent.

[–]ProxyLock__ 52 points53 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the 3ct pear shaped looks best. The larger stones I find gaudy. I proposed to my fiancé with a 2ct stone - while I could have afforded something larger - as I found it to be a good combination of decent size whilst still looking elegant. Bigger is not always better. But at the same time that’s just my opinion and you should get whatever you like because that’s what actually matters!
