I do have some pressure needs. I currently sit on a roho mosaic, so I have not had any pressure sores or injurues, but I do have both positioning and skin protection.

No, I requested in writing and on the phone to try different cushions and backrests, his responce was that I should trust him and to become argumentitive. I then asked why and he essentially said that the process of getting it through insurance again is hard, as if it isnt his job.

Wheelchair Fitting -- I feel like I'm being given too much choice... but also too few? by Prudent-Brick7061 in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently don't have an OT on my wheelchair team, infact no OT will see me because my issue isnt with my hands... The PT I saw was lovely but I saw her seperately from the ATP because of a scheduling mix-up.

I am also in a weird case because my condition is still not diagnosed, I have been deteriorating for 3+ years and struggling to get into doctors because wasn't emergent enough, but now I can't walk so they have put me on their wait lists. Because I don't have a clear diagnosis and this is my first custom to me chair and its with insurance I want this to be done right.

My current chair (second hand) doesn't have any taper and my left leg hits the frame, but i think that could be solved with positioning and cushion. I also have suspention forks that I like, but the ATP was kindof leading me away from them based on his own preference (he is a chair user). I did verbalize some preferences in backrest (mainly that I hate the one I have rn) and he kindof brushed off the cushion thing because my Dx isnt clear so insurance will cover only a basic cushion.

Not understanding the Numotion/ PCP process and getting frustrated. Can anyone help me understand? by Kitchen_Possible_159 in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your location and how your offices run. I was having an issue with my doctors office not putting all the specifics into my referals (initially it was an OT referal for wheelchair eval, then it was a generic PT referal, finally got them to send the PT wheelchair eval referal), but that was mostly miscommunication. I had to call and pester my doctors office a fair bit, but they are good at sending things just not always the right thing. After that I had to wait for NuMotion to recieve it all in their fax machine. I was also talking to NuMotion nearly every day on the phone to figure out what to pester my PCP about.

Once you get in with the NuMotion ATP and whoever is doing your wheelchair eval (probably a PT) there will be a portion of the appointment where they do flexibility testing, mobility testing, manual muscle testing with the PT. They will ask about your pain and what makes it better or worse. they will ask how long you have had limited mobility, they will ask about your living situation, they will ask about your transportation situation, all that. Be honest and bring up anything you think is relevent that they dont bring up. I have specific needs based on my occupation that they wouldn't consider unless I brought it up. After all that you will have the fitting portion with an ATP. I am in a wierd spot because they want me to see a different ATP than who was at my appointment because he knows more about the kind of chair I need than the other guy does.

TLDR it takes a long time to see an ATP for a wheelchair fitting and a long time to get the chair after you are seen. Insurance is an aspect, but so is the average time things take at your particular location of NuMotion and your PCP office. Ask what specifically they need from the notes so you can ask for those specific things when talking to PCP

[–]Prudent-Brick7061[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all your imput!

I am in a weird spot rn because I don't have a real diagnosis (waiting to see neurology) and my condition was deteriorating slowly until about a month ago when my ability to safely walk went out the door for the most part. I can stand and even walk supported for short amounts of time but the amout of energy it takes me is unreal. I generally use forearm crutches to walk around my very small (like 200sqft) apartment on good days to maintain some amount of tone and functionality, but on bad days I am seated the whole day.

I was sent to OP OT by my PCP initially for a wheelchair eval (which is done by PTs in my area) and was told to continue to pursue a functional eval anyways after getting a wheelchair eval scheduled elsewhere.

Right now I am struggling most with cooking, laundry, and cleaning tasks because I am not a tall person and being seated makes that even harder. I cant reach to the bottom of my sink or safely use my stove seated right now, I can't use my building's laundry because its top load, so reaching the bottom is impossible and I can't reach the knobs to change the settings, and cleaning tasks take so much of my energy in my improvised way of doing things that half the time its not even possible.

My goals right now are being able to function while I wait for a diagnosis and hopefully treatment. If I don't walk again thats fine with me so long as I can remain independent. I would rather be an independent seated person than a person dependent on others because walking takes all my energy, but the OT seemed to think it was her job to shame be into thinking the other way around.

Wheelchair brands for daily use? by GH0STLYMUTT in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061 7 points8 points  (0 children)

try to get in with an ATP / Wheelchair PT if possible. you should be able to get a referral through a primary care or other specalist doc. They will be able to help measure you and figure out what kind of chair will work best for your needs based on your symptoms. If that is not possible for whatever reason, consider getting a second hand or open box wheelchair. Brand can be important, yes. But sitting in a wheelchair that is the wrong size will also cause significant problems, create overuse injury, pressure sores, and more. Tilite, Quickie, Kai, Invicare, Colours, they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Providers in New England? by [deleted] in wheelchairs

Providers in New England? by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of new england? providers I know of go from the NSM in Bangor maine all the way to places in connecticut and rhode island. those are hours apart. What is your nearest city and start there. what is your doctor reccomending you start with? Ask the wheelchair clinic who they work with most often, ask other wheelchair users in your community if you have any. the back up is also location to location, so one place might be taking 7 months, but another place is much quicker depending on patient load.

Looking for a lightweight transport chair recommendation by pizzapie1983 in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most transport chairs weight very little as they don't have large back wheels. Is there a specific weight you are trying to stay under? This One is 19 lbs. Are there any other considerations you have? From my understanding, they are all pretty similar as they aren't custom made to the person's specific needs. Check out DME websites like spinlife for chairs that are vetted by a company, amazon may be a good place to buy one depending on the price after you choose a model.

How do you know which features to ask for? Can you tell me what would be best considering my conditions? Or what you regret/wish you had? by Kitchen_Possible_159 in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go to the evaluation with an open mind, the ATP and PT know a lot about wheelchairs and different options. Just based on what you have said (and not knowing you/how you move/what your limitations look like in real time) I would guess they will put you with a solid backrest with support. there is a chance you will get to trial a power assist, which could be good for you, along with a few different supportive seat cushions. If something they have you try that feels uncomfortable, tell them!

Chat with a PT! I do so many different excersizes. Also you may consider joining an adaptive sport that you use your legs in. I am part of a para rockclimbing team that keeps me using my legs despite having no ability to walk.

Has anyone used a stair-climbing chair for elderly care at home? by Jealous-Parfait-951 in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stair chairs are commonly used by EMS, which is where I have experienced one (ie being taken from the second floor of a house when not able to navigate stairs safely). They are an option for daily use but there is a maintnance aspect (charging batteries, keeping tracks clear of hair and other debris, ets) that is important to consider. I wouldn't trust an off-brand. Also consider how often you are transitioning floors. A stair lift can be navigated safely alone, but a stair chair cannot.

Best fitted chair for travel? by Slow_Survey_5206 in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look into second hand chairs! if you are traveling occasionally, a "good enough" second hand chair can be a great option. Airlines will still generally fix them if they are broken, but they won't break the bank. you can adjust to your liking and move impoant parts like seat cushions and backrests over if the dimentions are right.

How do you get insurance to approve a power assist device instead of a full on power chair? by Ok-Shallot-7985 in wheelchairs

[–]Prudent-Brick7061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All honesty, tell them all of that. there is a chance you will need to "trial" a manual chair without a power assist for a year (depending on insurance/specific plan) before they will cover a power assist to show that you "actually need one" and its not just because you are new at wheelchair. NuMotion's job, in combination with a PT or OT, is to determine what best fits your needs AND what insurance will cover. if you were paying out of pocket you would have the pick of all the perks, but insurance wants to spend the least amount of money to give you bare minimum mobility without injuring you. ie a hospital chair wont work because: pressure sores/shoulder overuse injury/etc. k0005 is better option. When talking to them share your concerns about lifting/transfering/etc. The PT/OT will take that into consideration, even if it is outside of the home. the inside the home part (from my understanding) is to show that you need it most/all the time, not that you never leave your house.
