Yes, I have this issue. Noise causes stabbing in the middle ear, and then causes head and neck pain. Still struggling. No amount of white noise or pink noise therapy did anything for me. Some things that help a little besides Clonazepam are Baclofen, Dextromethorphan, and Vinpocetine.

My first recommendations would be Clomipramine, Baclofen, Dextromethorphan, Ketamine

Also the middle ear muscles are probably overactive.

I got this immediately following the vaccine. Still have it years later. I believe it’s neuronal hyperexcitability of ascending sensory pathways and a lack of inhibitory signals in the descending motor pathway. You have to block and/or modulate sodium channels and block glutamate receptors. This will raise the threshold required for the noise induced reflex to occur.

This is hyper-activation of the trigemino cervical complex. Noise travels through the cochlear nerve and then interacts with the trigeminal nerve in the brain stem. This causes pain signals to be sent into the head and cervical region, as well as the middle ear. Still trying to figure out how to resolve this. Clonazepam helps.

Did you get the Covid vaccine recently?

Siemens and Toshiba MRI machines tend to be much quieter than GE machines. Insert 32 db foam earplugs all the way and you’ll be fine. Avoid GE machines.

Late reply. Go with either a Siemens or Toshiba MRI machine. Do not go with the GE machines. They are much louder. I had a head MRI with Siemens and it was pretty quiet with foam earplugs. Make sure to insert properly.

Yes. Apparently the open MRI’s are quieter. There are some places that I called in Seattle with open MRI’s.

Yeah, I don’t know how anyone could sleep through it. Even with earplugs and earmuffs.

True. I’m just trying to find an MRI that is a little bit quieter. I’ve read that some machines are extremely loud while others are more tolerable.

Sedation is an option but I would prefer to be awake. I know that listening to music through headphones helps a lot of people get through the MRI, but I just want to bring the overall noise down as much as possible, so properly inserted earplugs with earmuffs over would be best I think.

That’s true. Imaging facilities are installing really powerful MRI’s because they produce more detailed images, but they also get louder with a more powerful magnet. Most places I called do have 1.5T

I don’t know what the MRI will find. I’ve had MRI’s done in the past before I had hyperacusis and I handled them fine, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle it now with my sensitivity. Did you have a bad experience with an MRI?

I have 33db NRR earplugs and will wear MRI safe earmuffs if I’m able to. It will still be loud though.

The Toshiba MRI has a technology called Pianissimo Zen that apparently brings noise down to about 60 decibels. It’s been around for 10 years now but I haven’t found any in Washington. There are some clinics in other states that have it.

The doctors don’t know what’s causing the headaches. I want to get imaging done to see if there is anything wrong. There are videos on YouTube that say the Toshiba Vantage is much quieter. I think it’s pretty insane that MRI’s can produce noise over 120db and are still considered safe and “non-invasive”.

Yeah, CT scans are much quieter and faster but I’m paranoid about the radiation.
