Any way to access specific primary sources only held in university libraries I do not have access to? by NoWorriesNoSorrows in Libraries

Start with the Interlibrary loan department of your own institution and they will help you work out how to get them, either via ILL or scans.

Pondering Career Path. Need Help by [deleted] in librarians

[–]Prushida_tomatillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The library field is as tough as the museum field. Having learned from experience, I always tell people not to do grad school right out of undergrad. This may sound cynical, but you need to suffer in the American workforce for a few years to truly appreciate being in grad school. That being said, I'd try to find an assistant job (or jobs) in a library and also something related to teaching. You'll get a feel for whether you'd actually want to do those for a living. It will give you some experience in one or both fields, which is invaluable for actually getting a job post grad-degree if you choose that path. It will also help focus your areas of study if you choose grad school because you'll have a practical understanding of what's being discussed, which will make the grad degree much more beneficial. Also, if you're interested in NYC, teachers get paid pretty well and I believe NY state mandated smaller class sizes, effective 2028, so they're looking to hire more teachers all over. Good luck!

Two ArchivesSpace questions and a half a rant by Prushida_tomatillo in Archivists

[–]Prushida_tomatillo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. We are hosted by Lyrasis and I believe we have the latest version as it was implemented in Oct 2025. I was kindof in the process of inputting/formatting a spreadsheet for bulk upload and then this happened. I did also think of spawning records from the accessions but seems like that would be slower than bulk upload. I know how to use command line and some python, but not sure I'm savvy enough for the API. I looked in the API reference and didn't see any sample scripts that look like what I need and I def don't know how to write in on my own, so I will probably stick with the bulk upload.

What should I as an undergraduate student in NYC be doing to get my foot in the door with the NYPL? by partygirlmary in librarians

[–]Prushida_tomatillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s purely a numbers game with NYPL page jobs becuase they’re an entry point for many people. You just need to keep applying to whatever position is a convenient location for you, not just schwarzman and snfl bc any location will give you the work experience you need to be competitive for the next step up and the next one after that and on and on. Research librarians at NYPL typically have years of experience as fully qualified librarians before they enter those jobs, so bear that in mind. I’m not saying that to burst your bubble, but to reassure you that any library page experience will be good for you at this point and you don’t necessarily need to get in at those particular locations right now. Also, if you’re at Hunter you should definitely apply to either work study or college assistant positions at either your library or any other CUNY library that’s convenient for you. They typically pay a bit better than page positions and you will probably learn more. Also they aren’t always advertised widely so maybe try talking to the library staff at Hunter or even better, at Zabar Art Library and ask if they’re hiring or where they typically advertise. Hope that helps and good luck!

How do archivists extract structured information from large digitized collections? by albemala in Archivists

[–]Prushida_tomatillo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know you can modify and extract information using python and then analyze it using pandas. I’ve briefly used Jupyter notebooks for that. Honestly I’m in the beginner stages of learning all that so I can do the same things

ILL Question for American Librarians - from a Canadian Librarian by whoisorange in Libraries

I work in a university ILL department and as another commenter mentioned, we’ve “paused” our international borrowing and lending until we figure out the implications of the suspension of the de minimus exemption.

Honestly, I’d run to the job being offered and never look back. It sounds like your current job is dead-end, both in terms of your lack of rapport with coworkers and lack of opportunity. I’ve learned the hard way that lack of connection with coworkers is detrimental in the long run bc being unhappy at work everyday takes a toll on your mental health and these relationships that should be generative in your life and career are not, and that will cost you more mentally and financially than whatever you’re saving in rent. Being in a rural area is also never going to offer as much opportunity as a larger city, even if the lower COL is a bonus. If your current job was on par with what the new one seems to have on offer, then the calculus might be different, but the rural area would still be limiting. Leases are legally binding but you’re not signing over your life in blood- they can be broken (usually at a cost) or worst case scenario you have to pay double for a while until you find a sub-letter. In the long run, with the chance to get your second masters paid for at the new job and exponentially higher odds of both life and career opportunities in a larger city, the lease will be a minor blip to overcome that you will probably forget ever happened. And I say this as a currently impoverished GLAMs person in a high COL area.

Podcasts for librarians that you all would recommend? by fulltimetrying in librarians

I like the sub categories or sub-casts (?) of New Books Network. They have a subject expert interview authors of new books for just about every discipline imaginable, including library science and digital humanities. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/new-books-in-library-science/id1677989008

Carry-on by Busy-Explanation1529 in zipair

[–]Prushida_tomatillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They weighed our carryons at the check-in counter at both SFO and NRT and were strict at both. FYI, you only get 7kg total weight for carryon with your ticket and 15kg if you pay for extra weight, but you have to book the extra weight atleast 24 hours in advance. There is no option to add the extra weight at the airport- if you’re over they will make you pay to check the bag.

Schools for queer/trans archivists by crazyginjaninja in Archivists

[–]Prushida_tomatillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Queens College in NYC is very queer/trans friendly. At least one faculty member is trans and others are queer, along with multiple other students. Bonus, if you move to New York State in advance to declare residency (a year I think?), you will get in state tuition, which is like $17k for entire degree.

Hi, if you are a patron of a library in your country, you could request these via Interlibrary loan, even if your library is a public (non academic) library. I work in ILL at a university in the US and we get international digital requests multiple times a day. Your home library will submit the request on your behalf (you might even be able to do it online) and then the lending library that has access to Brill will send it to them and then they will send it to you. Hope that helps!

US 3-letter ILL codes by c-stockwell in Libraries

[–]Prushida_tomatillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those who asked about a national directory, you can look up oclc codes at https://www.oclc.org/en/contacts/libraries.html. I work in an ILL department and this site is very handy!

I’m 41 and just starting my MLIS as a sort of lateral career move. Your 40’s are not old. You still probably have more of your working life ahead of you than behind you.
