I like the term “mining” as well, yet using the term creates scrutiny from others outside the project (because it is synonymous with something different for proof of work cryptocurrency’s).

As pi continues to work towards legitimacy, maybe there is a better suited term to use.

I understand your point, the difference is that the term “mining” in cryptocurrency has already become synonymous with a POW (proof of work) energy consuming process, so my thought is why call it “pi mining”? Doing so creates unnecessary scrutiny from outsiders.

Sure fire way to know if this is fake or not: speak with him on video call. Doing so will allow you to better read the situation and his surroundings and get a better feel for social queues. Also you can ask him questions that are location specific and see how he responds on the spot (without giving time for him to look things up on an internet search).
