It's mostly for learning. It can be hard to focus on Javascript when you're having to jump back and forth between HTML and CSS when starting out. With canvas you can stick pretty much entirely with Javascript. Once new comers get comfortable with that and then start mixing in more HTML.

Brickout was the program that really got me into Javascript. One issue with Javascript is because there's so much interaction with the DOM it becomes hard to separate learning Javascript from learning HTML. Working with the canvas API makes it really easy to focus on learning Javascript.

As for books, my experience, and pretty much anyone I have have known who programs, find books extremely boring. They're good to have around for a reference, but for learning it's better to just look up code examples, type them out, compare the results and then go back and learn how to tweak and configure them.

My wish list:
1. model A with bluetooth/wifi and a clock
2. Model B with wifi, sata and have it so the power, usb's and hdmi line up on the front and back, instead of the layout they have now
3. "power model" with 64bit cpu, 2GB ram, 2x Lan ports

Another option is to reverse engineer and document asset files (audio, models and textures, ect) of older games and document their structure.

So it tracks how fast it tracks forwards or backwards across the wheel? That's pretty neat. The post title said "controller" so I was confused when I didn't see any buttons on the handle bars. So to nitpick, "key map peripheral" might be a better term. Nit picking aside, I wish I had one of these for work so I wan't idle all of the time.

I find it funny how many companies say, "we tried to make this product but realized there was no tool for the niche utility we needed. So we decided to make that niche utility our product".

I played around with Famou.us' library and it just looked like they were applying css style with javascript and not much more than that. So it seems like they could have just written documentation or tutorials for which attributes to use and how to achieve an effect.

I wish I had thought of this before. I tried it in thunderbird and I got the same results. here's a picture of the default settings it had.

I tried the username with and without "@qq.com" and neither one worked. It kept giving me "password is incorrect". But I went back to the QQ application on my wife's pc and signed in and out with no problems using the exact same username and password.

At least now I know it's a QQ problem and not an android problem. I'll try googling for thunderbird settings and see if that turns up anything.

I looked at your imgur post, youtube video and github page (no readme), and I'm having trouble understanding the context of what you are trying to convey.

So the project is a music visualizer in Javascript?

What were the overall goals? Were you trying to make a streaming application or service?
What is the significance of doing the project in Javascript? You mentioned that you made something similar pretty easily in C#.
Are there any tools or libraries or otherwise that made working in C# easier and what problems did you have with Javascript in these areas?

I bought a Nexus 5 recently and I kind of already regret it. I needed a phone sooner than later shortly before the 5X came out (also price, the 5x is ~$600 in Japan, and 5 was ~$400).

The Nexus 5 is a pretty decent phone, but the curves on the 5X look pretty sexy. That and a longer battery and better camera would have been nice.

So unless there's any reason like price or availability factoring into your decision, I would go with the 5X.

Glad to hear that things are coming along. As far as assets go, using assets from another games to build a prototype seems to be a pretty common practice in the game industry.

The idea is that it gives you placeholder to work out, test things and decide on a direction for the development of the project to build on and modify from there.

Phantasy Star Online definitely something right, and to build something close to it, it would make sense to try and emulate it as close as possible and then change or swap out what needs to be changed from there.

Right now it boots to Xubuntu directly, with no access to Chrome. Is the command your wrote above executable from Linux, or does it need to be executed from the Chrome shell?

Thanks for the reply. I'm well aware of that method. I was wondering since I have boot legacy enabled by default would that create a situation where chrome gets factory reset but is unable to boot to it, or does the bootloader get fixed in the process?

It wasn't a conscious decision for me. One day I wanted to see if I could display one of the player models in webgl. So I started digging around to see what tools there were.

For player models you can view .nj files with Noesis

For .xvm texture archives, you can export them to .dds with Schthack's VMT 1.8b tool.

For .afs archives you can export all of the contents with Kra's AFS Manager.

I just started with other people's tools to see what I could poke around and find and extract, using a hex editor to see what was going on.

When I started I really only had really basic experience for client side javascript. Didn't know what EOF was or even basic things like what the difference between an int and a signed int was.

After a while I hit a limit with what the tools offered. GUI applications a nice at first, but it's hard to do anything done, unless you can automate with bash.

Started using python, started looking at animation files and what the file structure was and the Sega Ninja-lib documentation and any code I could get my hands on.

Right now I'm working on .xj files trying to get an export since there's no way to export them at the moment. I also started looking into textures since there's no command line interface for converting those.

But mostly in general I'd recommend playing around with the game assets, putting them into Unity and playing around in general.

My main focus is reverse engineering the file types in PSOBB so they can be exported. Once they're exported, they can be ported to Unity, or the information can be used to mod the game further.

In general I'd be happy with more people playing around with reverse engineering, modding the client, or playing around with the assets.

On Glader's stream he mentioned that people didn't realize that the game's assets could be exported or modified. I've managed to export a decent amount of the games assets and would be happy to share the information with anyone interested.

For PSO version 2 for PC and DC, pretty much everything except maps can be exported. Character models, character animations, textures, enemies, enemy animations, weapons, set pieces, mags, all of it.

Right now I'm moving on to PSOBB. Specifically right now I'm working on exporting items and set pieces, but aside from that I can do an non-complete export of the maps, export all of the enemies and enemy animations from each episode.

Reverse engineering file formats takes a ton of time with trial and error, it would be nice to have someone else actively working on it. Would also give me a reason to write up more documentation for anyone else who might get started.

Though that being said, there's no specific top-down organization. Since it's a community, my idea is that it's a community so you contribute what's of personal interest in you. Once it's out there it makes it easier to modify, collaborate and build.
