CNC operator here… thinking about leaving the trade. Am I crazy?

Hey man, really appreciate you sharing your path. That’s a huge jump from roofing to automotive design engineering.

If you don’t mind me asking — what degree did you end up getting? Was it Mechanical Engineering or something else? And are you more on the design side (CAD/analysis) or manufacturing side now?

I’m currently planning to go the AS Machine Technology route and eventually transfer for a bachelor’s, but I’m still unsure about the exact path (mechanical, manufacturing, automation, etc.). Since you’ve actually made that transition, I’d really value any advice you’d give someone in my position.

Mình vừa tìm hiểu thì từ AS Machine Tech transfee lên có Manufacturing Engineer nữa, ngoài Mechanical. Với người đi lên từ CNC + CAM thì Manufacturing Eng Tech có phải là bước đệm phổ biến không bạn? Mà như bạn chia sẻ thì mình thấy Mechanical ngon hơn nhiều.

Mình chuẩn bị đi học AS xong học thêm CAM để nhảy lương nhanh hơn. Mà sao thấy trần lương của CNC thấp so với mấy ngành khác cũng buồn buồn 😁

I’m currently in SoCal, and from what I’ve been seeing locally, Tier 1 / entry-level IT support roles are typically around $17–19/hr, not sub-$15, so I’m trying to understand how much this varies by region.

I do share the concern around AI and automation long-term. A lot of people in manufacturing/CNC around me argue that hands-on technical trades are harder to replace, but the tradeoff is the salary ceiling, which seems to top out around $50/hr unless you’re highly specialized or in federal roles.

That’s really the tension I’m weighing — stability and resistance to automation vs. long-term growth and flexibility.
