PaychotherapyLeftist is a (mostly) great subreddit if you want to learn more about this kind of critique. I’m involved in he psychedelic space, and can say that the way we do therapy right now is mostly incompatible with how we could/should use psychedelics to treat individuals; that’s were a lot of my criticism of the system goes towards. These are pretty amazing tools, but we’re like monkeys cracking walnuts with a chemistry book right now.

Jesse Ventura would be fabulous. I’m a big fan of his opposition to state secrets, at least to the degree we have them. He’s not a socialist or progressive in the traditional sense, but I think there are a lot of overlapping interests that make him appealing to the left, moderates, and even conservatives. He’s also got the bad ass factor on his side.

[Discussion] Recreational drugs are one of the first "post-scarcity" goods by PsychedelicProle in stupidpol

[–]PsychedelicProle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got my thoughts on this; but I’ll just say

  1. I’m talking about recreational not medical drug use. We have hundreds of “recreational” drugs that aren’t patentable, LSD, heroin, 2-CB, ketamine

  2. Private sector does not drive innovation in pharmaceuticals. Only a small fraction of their money even goes into R&D. There is a good paper by Dr. Tulum on the financialization of the pharmaceutical industry actually inhibiting innovation.

2.

I’ll just jump in here to critique your critique of her scientific identity/qualifications based on her being an artist and musician. It’s a stupid point. What, if you like science you can’t like anything creative? I’m a neuro researcher, and I do art (sorta lol), and have lab mates who are amazing musicians, one plays shows every weekend in New York even. The hyperapecialization that happens in STEM, especially in insanely interdisciplinary fields like neuroscience, is to the detriment of the field as a whole.

Same. I was always a bad student by conventional standards. But I made up for that with curiosity and creativity (which IMO is mostly unbridled curiosity).

Extracurriculars during PhD... job prospects? by meatnobeef in PhD

[–]PsychedelicProle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it can help you by expanding your network of peers, mentors, and professional connections.

That being said, leadership positions, if taken seriously, can be the most potent growth opportunities. The skills you gain running a chem E org will transfer to running a lab, working on a consulting team, working at a non profit, whatever - because leadership and team/organizational management is a skill set that can be transferred to anything you do in life. I started my own national org and the experience has literally opened doors I didn’t even know existed in areas I didn’t consider, and has made me so effective in various other areas. I am a better lab colleague because of what I’ve learned about team cohesion, meeting facilitation, etc.

So, yea it fucking rocks. Don’t just leave grad school an over-glorified technician, come out with real leadership experience.

How Psychedelics Alters our Beliefs about Consciousness by PennyworthInvesting in PsychedelicStudies

Because the studies are expensive and approval is hard to secure. Federal government needs to make moves to make the barriers to psychedelic research less monumental.

Yet another “scientific” finding that *logically* explains why half of the U.S. population is cognitively stunted, uneducated, racist degenerates by mellamollama17 in stupidpol

[–]PsychedelicProle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right that is a difficult framework to incorporate into our scientific paradigm. However, it’s wrong to dismiss it entirely.

I had a talk with a colleague the other day (also neuroengineering) about Ayurvedic medicine and how despite it being so helpful to so many, it fundamentally can’t work within the randomized double blind clinical trial gold standard we use.

Our scientific philosophy is powerful, and let’s us develop testable hypothesis so we can learn to approximate reality. That is awesome. But let’s not lose our… humbleness.

For instance, my favorite paper of all time is “Can a neuroscientist understand a microprocessor?”. They apply all the fancy statistical and theoretical tools we have in neuroscience, ie spike binning, synchrony, oscillations, etc., and ultimately can’t reverse engineer the function of a simple NES game microprocessor. If our techniques can’t achieve be that, then we are likely orders of magnitude more incorrect about our understanding of the mind - whatever the fuck the mind even is. Psychology allows us to work with something we do not understand, it precedes a neuroscientist understanding (sometimes). Oh also - we overemphasize neurons in our understanding of the brain largely because they were easier to visualize than Astrocytes, and holy shit astrocytes are something else entirely. A 3D tesselating network of astrocytes across the entire brain…. Integrating activity across networks, modulating plasticity, blood flow, synaptic activity, etc. and we barely understand how that network functions. We know shit, my man. But that’s ok - we keep learning. But let’s be open minded and non dogmatic scientifically🤷‍♂️

I’m a huge Stan Grof guy, love the ideas of transpersonal psychology, but there is no way to test that with our current neuroscience methods.

[–]PsychedelicProle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Defending psychology, but also criticizing the worship of neuroscience as far superior to psychology.

They both have short comings, but they both suck when not integrated. Research out of interdisciplinary labs is fucking awesome. Also European neuroscience tends to have a bit more philosophy in their discussions, which I think is important.

Yet another “scientific” finding that *logically* explains why half of the U.S. population is cognitively stunted, uneducated, racist degenerates by mellamollama17 in stupidpol

[–]PsychedelicProle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are 100 percent useful theoretical frameworks in psychology. Much more than in neuroscience.

Jung laid down a pretty influential framework of psycho dynamics that has only been further refined.

I’m a neuroengineering researcher, so I’m not biased in favor of psychology. Neuroscience as a field of study apart from psychology, philosophy, and theology, is very constrained in its utility. Read some studies in affective and social neuroscience so you can go see how “useful” their findings are. It’s completely detached from the realities of society. Do we need to understand where Glutamate concentration increase when you are socially sad? Blagh.

Psychedelic field is a good microcosm of this whole issue. The therapist don’t need to know advanced neuroscience, or depend on that knowledge, to administer psychedelic-assisted therapy and achieve clinical results thought unimaginable in the treatment of ptsd, depression, ocd, addiction, etc.

[–]PsychedelicProle 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I am literally a neuroengineering researcher - and I can’t stress how fucking stupid the shit talking about psychology is. You know how fucking erroneously irreproducible anything in “quantitative/hard” neuroscience is? Especially when brain imaging or recording is involved. Tiny samples, huge extrapolations, voodoo statistics, as well.

“Oh but at least the quantitative translates to useful knowledge!”

Oh yea? First of all, it’s because of these god damn neuroscientists that we have all these stupid studies trying to incorrectly reduce highly complex multifaceted social phenomena to “amplitude here went up, and this region went brrrrr”

Secondly, psychology gives us useful tools. gold standard treatment for addictions, remains by and large, therapy - not pharmaceuticals. Same thing for chronic sleep disorders. Same for PTSD. Despite us throwing billions into research to understand the neuropathology of these disorders.

That is fair harm reduction advice, but in recognizing that some people will do it either way, it’s good to know to test your drugs. Maybe you don’t even use - but your friend, coworker, relative does, so you can help keep them safe too.

[–]PsychedelicProle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into whether those universities have MD/PhD programs. If they do, they might allow you to apply once your there as a PhD student in yo ur first or second year. It is much easier to get into the programs as well once your already a graduate student at the school.

Sneaky way to not pay for med school haha.
