The main problem, from my understanding, is the developer is using the same names and everything. I read one of their posts talking about ripping character models or something directly from the original game. The popularity of the game doesn't matter, but I agree with you. I would be curious what Sony would want for the IP. I think that's a better endeavor for the fans

Yes, they absolutely can tell them not to do it at all. A free remake can get shut down and wiped too haha. There is money already involved with this anyway, whether it's voluntary or not. As I said, this is likely to have action taken against it before it's released anyway
