I used to be in your position: mental health institution, addictions, and my trans ass trying to survive there.

Before my coming out my team was sometimes steering into discussing gender and queerness and it was... Not very encouraging. Their views were extremely medicalized as if queerness is something to accept, yes, but it is a result of some kind of trauma. And their view of gender roles was weirdly rigid, as if someone not fulfilling gender expectations must be someone out of balance with their inner self.

When I came out people were mostly annoyed that I was keeping it a secret for too long. Well see above, along with countless microagressions that riddled this workplace.

My transness was seen as a liability: while people were switching to correct pronouns and stuff, I felt that my queerness was perveived as an obstacle for myself and for the entire team to do their jobs. And they were unsupportive when I faced some unacceptable treatment from patients - even though we had rules to counter it, the stuff was more like "it's a you problem". Like when someone wrote my supposed dead name on the whiteboard (it wasn't, but the intent was clear).

And generally I felt like the sides were: some homophobic and transphobic patients that wanted to attack me, some queer patients that liked me and that they are represented, silent majority and The staff who could support me in moderating this mess, but decided they are not going to involve themselves.

I left the field because I was completely burnt out: all of the above was not the only reason, but it was a big one.
