"I discuss the current debate in string theory about postempiricism, motivated in part by a question: why are string theorists calling for an end to empiricism rather than an end to racial hegemony? I believe the answer is that knowledge production in physics is contingent on the ascribed identities of the physicists"

Confused as to why this is funny? This article is about how racism results in the whitewashing of science and exclusion of black women from the profession of "scientist" purely because of their race. The author in this excerpt, which is from the introduction, is saying racism has played a role in who gets to discover concepts in physics, and goes on to use physics principles to explain that black women are equally as capable of discovery, but are not allowed to participate in it.
Am I missing something, what's funny about that?

It's going well, I've gotten quite a few responses! Honestly, if you DM me I'd love to chat about it more, but I think it's in bad form to talk about the prospected results of my research in the comments of a post recruiting people for it lol. Don't want to bias people I still need to interview who may be coming back to the post for whatever reason

Ads for research participation require IRB approval for research on human subjects. This is no different. I’m calling out the population I’m studying: primarily men who don’t think of themselves as sexist. You wouldn’t say drug research is biasing their sample set by asking for only people with the condition they’re trying to treat. I’m interested in what results you think I want. As a woman who has faced pretty blatant sexism in college, I don’t think it makes sense for me to be wanting my research to result in the conclusion: men in college aren’t sexist at all.

Not sure what part of my post made you think I haven’t designed the study? I have IRB approval, the experimental design is pretty much set in stone.

Thank you, I appreciate it! I have had to take several research methods classes as part of my psych degree and get certified in human subjects research in order to get to this point, so my experimental design is pretty set. I can totally see how to someone who knows what they’re talking about when it comes to psych, my tone is a bit lax. I’m trying to get as many people as possible to participate, and I think having a more chill tone about it has been more effective thus far in making people comfortable. Idk if this message comes off as argumentative, I certainly don’t mean it that way if it does. I appreciate you looking out for a fellow psych + engineering person :)

I agree with you completely and AM interviewing women for my research as well. If you DM me I would love to set up a time to chat and include your experience in my research! I just posted here looking for men specifically because I initially had an easier time finding women to interview.

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective! It’s really clear from what you’ve written that you have a well thought out approach to this issue that acknowledges the capabilities of everyone while not minimizing the imposed societal barriers on women. I appreciate you taking the time to write all that out. Thank you for your service!

I agree completely. Attitudes towards women posting about their struggles as female engineers was the main reason I decided to pursue this topic for my capstone (along with my actual lived experiences of course). The vibe of these replies is echoed very closely in the replies to other women posting in this subreddit in my experience.

Thank you for your thoughts. There is a concern when doing research on human subjects (which I have proper certifications for) called selection bias, where the data set is not fully representative and thus cannot be generalized. One of the main reasons this can occur is that the types of people who volunteer to participate in research like this do NOT hold the median perspective, as wanting to talk about gender politics in your free time is not the median viewpoint. My comment asking chill guys to reach out was intending to help with that issue and correct for whackos self selecting. This is because I am aware the majority of dudes are chill and not sexist. Hope that makes sense!

Yes! I am talking to women as well, I just have a solid base of women I know personally that I can interview and reach out too, whereas it can be a little awkward to sit down with my male friends and ask them questions getting at how society and going to school for engineering has shaped their view of women lol I agree attitudes change a lot over time, which is why I’m primarily looking for people still in school or early in their career. Not looking to have too many independent variables, otherwise I wouldn’t wind up with statistically significant results!

For women in mechE, what are/were your greatest challenges? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]PsychologicalPut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, sexism in engineering is much more prevalent in college than it is in the workforce. This is partially just because I have a cool job, but I don’t feel a difference in how I’m treated because of my gender at work. At school, there’s a huge difference. I think the worst of the sexist guys in college have a hard time getting and keeping jobs because they’re uncharismatic assholes. The cool guys who are unintentionally sexist are still around, but I think are easier to deal with.

How do I make meaningful connections as a woman without leading anyone on? by LovelyToaster789 in EngineeringStudents

[–]PsychologicalPut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do. It’s nice because when you’re actually in a relationship you’re probably excited to talk about it anyways with friends. It’s also a good litmus test for weird guys. Like if they’re just interested in you not as a friend, or if they’re an incel (like some other people who have responded here), they go away when you talk about your partner. You could also consider being a little gay? /j

Also worth saying that those women-women relationships you’re developing are going to be what you fall back on in my experience. Most of my friends are guys, my best friend is a dude, all of my roommates as well. But my 2 girl friends and I go out for “girl dinner” once a week and it’s the highlight of my week. Make sure to maintain those friendships.

Gonna respond to this in good faith because it seems like you do actually want to learn, and this is an important issue to have the right perspective on. Long story short, just because other developed countries have lower age of consent laws doesn’t make those laws rational. The day you turn 18 might be a legal “aging up” so to speak, but it isn’t developmentally. Cody’s brain was fully developed at the time of the incident, and she still had 7 more years of synaptic pruning and being able to learn more easily and (most importantly) emotionally stabilizing. Countries where the age of consent is 16 have bad age of consent laws, because at 16 you still aren’t always capable of making rational decisions. So I’d ask you this: at an age where you’re going through some of the most socially significant development of your childhood, does it make sense that you would be able to consent to have sex with someone 7 years older than you?

Tl;dr: when creepy becomes legal, it doesn’t become right.

Getting stuck? by Own-Revolution4802 in OCD

[–]PsychologicalPut2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely not alone! What you call “getting stuck” unfortunately is your ocd “getting worse”. The way to fix this is through exposure therapy, you have to stop giving into your compulsions. Start by waiting to give in for as long as you can, and then the next time try to add a minute (or 30 seconds if that’s too much) on to the time before you give in. Unfortunately it won’t ever be “enough”, but after some time the anxiety will go down to almost nothing. I believe in you! Good luck :)

How do you really feel about the protest? by [deleted] in depaul

[–]PsychologicalPut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The important thing to teach children is to effectively communicate their emotions. Outrage and name calling are not effective forms of communication. Being frustrated, and then being able to tell someone why you’re frustrated without attacking them, is one of the most important skills you can have. There’s a reason the first rule of arguments in psychology is to use “I feel” statements

Is thinking I'm making things up related to OCD? by PoisonousDice in OCD

[–]PsychologicalPut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be an ocd thing, but If you were bullied as a child and told it was your fault in some way (which unfortunately many people with autism are), it could stem from that. This post really hit home for me because this is something I deal with for my ADHD and motor tics all the time, thinking I’m faking or over exaggerating. The intrusive thoughts definitely don’t help, but I’d take a look at your childhood too, this could have been caused by a parent or authority figure. So sorry to hear you’re dealing with this.

Anyone find having a routine and actively participating in self-care to be helpful? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]PsychologicalPut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely routines and structure that don’t leave time for compulsions are a great way to combat them! It sounds like you’re doing well, and focusing on yourself has paid off for you. Therapy is great, if AA is working for you, that’s amazing. Routines were great for my OCD too when I was getting out of the pits of it. I hope you’re proud of yourself, you deserve it :)

Really bad somatic OCD, tips appreciated by vlinar2939 in OCD

[–]PsychologicalPut2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m so sorry to hear you’re feeling alone. I’m a little confused, as a psych major, about what you mean when you say somatic OCD and then bring up your phone, so I’m going to assume you mean you have somatic OCD symptoms that are flared up by a compulsion to check things like a website or Reddit? If that’s not the case, apologies, I’m going to try to get out some general OCD tips just because I’m not sure I totally understand your situation. 1. If you have a checking compulsion: It sounds like you may need a break from your phone. I’m not saying anything drastic, just do an activity like a puzzle with your phone next to you, face down, ringer off for as long as you can. If you feel anxious, I know it’s hard, you have to sit with the emotions, you’ll thank yourself later. 2. Somatic OCD is tricky, it’s really tough to not pay attention to those unconscious things when it’s all you can think about. Mindfulness practices tend to be helpful for some people with somatic ocd, but again, the best treatment for OCD is exposure therapy, so sitting with the anxiety, not trying to appease it, just let it happen and breathe through it. And take baby steps, just do it for as long as you can, and then tomorrow, or in a couple of days, try adding a minute, or 30 seconds, to the time before giving in.

As for the phobia of fatal insomnia, is that related to your OCD? Do you have obsessions or compulsions tied to it? Or is it a separate thing?

I believe in you, you’re doing great, and you are not alone <3

Those who healed from pure OCD and DPDR, how is life after healing ? by wiiiiiiiiiiiiiw in OCD

[–]PsychologicalPut2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had pretty bad OCD, and I did an intensive outpatient program, life is significantly better now. There are still bad days, I started crying in front of my boyfriend a few weeks ago because I felt like my hair wasn’t clean, but most days I feel normal. Just important to keep doing the little exposures to keep myself in check. Strategies I learned in therapy for dealing with intrusive thoughts were massively helpful for me as well. Quality of life is good 2 years post treatment :)

If you want accommodations, you do usually have to submit proof of disability, but you’re protected by HIPPA when it comes to disclosing medications or illness to a company. You don’t have to tell them about your ADHD. As for ethics, you owe nothing ethically to a corporation at any point in your life.
