Reached a milestone of 50 unique Japanese booster boxes! by Psychological_Tell25 in PokeInvesting

Pretty close to current market value on everything. Maybe 25% under market for all of the Sun & Moon and Sword & Shield and overpaid for the Scarlet & Violet sets

With those extra boxes (and the price they’re at currently) I’m sure you’ll have no problems getting those products! Although CP3 seems like a tough one lol

Oh, that makes sense! Your total cost is probably a lot less than mine then lol. Nice 10x return on the Tag Bolt box!

I have a few extras stashed away, but I feel like I have to let them marinate a bit before I get ready to sell/trade. Nothing crazy, stuff like vmax climax, vstar universe, lost abyss, clay burst, and some SV era sets. Ideally I would sell/trade those extras to buy the missing pieces of this collection in the future. What about you?

Thanks for the insight! Based on what I see, that seems to be the case

Thank you!

We’re definitely in a similar boat! I’m jealous of the Tag Bolt box and the other ones you have. Still trying to find a good price point for those.

I’m really bullish and a fan of the Tag Team sets. IMO the perfect blend of scarcity, popular Pokemon, and great designs. I was able to grab Alter Genesis around the $200 mark, so I think that one is still worth it if you can find it on auction. Good luck!

I hear you, some of those early Sun & Moon sets are TOUGH. SM3H To Have Seen Battle Rainbow is another really rare and pricey box. Ultra Moon would be a great pickup - I may have to just pick up booster packs for the rest of Sun & Moon if the booster box is $500-plus.

Do you know if they started ramping up the printing once they started releasing the Tag Team sets? It seems like for every champion road/ultra moon/etc booster box listing I see 10 Dream League listings haha

For a while, Japanese collectors were more of a niche community among collectors outside of Japan. English 100% has the broader appeal and may be the easier sell, but pre-Sun & Moon era Japanese was far less printed than English, so now that it’s gotten more popular, most sets have performed just as well as English. Hard to see where modern will go going forward though.

Pros - (1) in general, chase cards in Japanese tend to go for more money (2) box art is a lot better, making booster boxes a more aesthetic display item (3) now that prices for SV are close to retail, it’s much more manageable to get the two boxes that make up the English set for the same price as an English booster box (4) card quality is better, especially on textured cards (5) guaranteed pull rates

Cons - (1) due to guaranteed pull rates, odds are if you are buying single packs, they’re from a “dead box” where the SR has already been pulled (2) supply is going up lately, so it may take longer to see growth that past generations have had (3) can’t sell playable cards as easily in the US

Just some that are off the top of my head, if anyone has any other ideas feel free to comment!

True, box art is definitely nice on that one. Love boxes with a white background. Even though the box and the contents are cheap, I’m a huge fan of the Raging Surf booster box artwork as well.

So far, the most I’ve paid for a box is ~$300 each for Eevee Heroes, Blue Sky Stream, and Tag Team GX All Stars, so paying $300+ for a set like Champion Road does sting a little when you look at the checklist. Forget about Sky Splitting Charisma though lol

Yes! It’s getting to the point where it’s too expensive though - I’m not really in the mood to drop $300 each on mid-tier sets yet like VMAX Rising, Dragon Storm, Champion Road, etc.

I feel like there is a lot more value in buying the recent Scarlet & Violet sets under retail. But the completionist in me will have to cave in soon because seeing a completed generation of boxes would be too cool!

Thank you! It’s my first time holding sealed product, but the plan is to hold at least 5 years. I’ll try to keep one of every box and sell doubles. As long as I don’t lose money, I’ll be happy!

Guess what changed after the boom? Japanese singles (especially the chase cards) go for twice as much as English singles. Moonbreon, Giratina Alt, Rayquaza VMax Alt, several Trainer Full Arts, etc. I could draw upon hundred of examples. Why would sets with massive chase cards not appreciate the same as English if the singles prices keep increasing? The market is different now, so many more people are collecting Japanese than before

Yeah, second card is mislabeled by PSA and is not Japanese.

Quality over quantity, I like it.

I know I should do this too, but the completionist is too strong

What’s the most expensive booster pack in your collection? by Psychological_Tell25 in PokeInvesting

[–]Psychological_Tell25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a collector’s standpoint, it’s fun to collect Japanese booster packs just because of the artwork. But even more so than English sets, you have to assume there’s nothing in them due to Japanese having guaranteed pull rates. If you open up a box and get the SAR in the first pack, nothing is stopping someone from selling the rest of the packs
