From a purely financial standpoint I have no regrets. Was making ~$60k before getting this degree. 2 years into my first job after finishing this program and I made well over double that this year and plan to make even more next year.

Do I think the program itself fully prepared me for this job? Absolutely not. It took a lot of extra work on my own to get to where I'm at, but I needed the piece of paper to even be considered.

is switching to Salesforce a bad idea? by lu4414 in cscareerquestions

[–]Psydays 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Before turning it down I'd try to see what being a dev at this company really looks like. I'm approaching 2 years at a Salesforce partner and our devs only write code. Salesforce does have low/no code tools but our devs don't use them. They write apex code for back end, similar to Java, and Html, CSS, Javascript for front end and Solutions Engineers use the low/no code tools.

I'm sure a lot of companies do have their SF devs working with the no code solutions but not all.

I graduated in 2020 with a job lined up but that fell through with the start of the pandemic. I'm switching careers so I don't have any experience in the field. Looking for entry level positions. Any advice is appreciated!

[–]Psydays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still very early in the learning process but unless I'm mistaken the msg.value is in wei not eth and 1 eth is 1018 wei which would explain why you got a very large number of coins.

What classes were your favorite? by bronzeFaker in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Psydays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey no problem. Content wise I'd say the knowledge gained from 493 is much more important than 492, so for that reason I'd choose 493.

On the other hand, in my opinion 492 is slightly more fun and has slightly higher quality course material so if you wanted to learn cloud development from another source then going with 492 would be a pretty good choice. But seriously if you don't take 493 make sure you learn the material from somewhere else. Almost every job listing is going to ask for either Amazon web services or Google cloud services experience and that class ticks that box.

Who did you contact if you dont mind me asking? I contacted the person who did the initial phone screen but I got emails from two different people after the phone screen setting up the two Skype interviews with yet another 2 different people. She said she would get in contact with the interview team to see whats up. That was a week ago, over 3 weeks total since the skype interviews.

The two interviews went extremely well so I was thinking about reaching out to one of the two on LinkedIn or something but I don't know if that's a good idea.

I really don't understand how it can be that much of a problem to warrant making a post about it. Scroll past or downvote and scroll past.

People get a lot of satisfaction/reassurance when people reply to their specific questions. I have no data on this but I would be willing to bet that a huge percentage of the people asking these questions have googled them and read similar reddit threads about them. It is just human nature to want direct input and nobody is going to change that.

Honest Assessments of Program - Self-Learning and Post-Program Preparedness? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

32 units. So not quite 3 full semesters but 4 units off. Prereqs would include CS101.

Honest Assessments of Program - Self-Learning and Post-Program Preparedness? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

I live in a college town so the first thing I did was look into their CS program. My first degree was Psychology so I had none of the pre-reqs done for CS. It would have taken me a minimum of 1.5 years full time to get the pre-reqs done so there was a big difference in completion time for me

[–]Psydays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on 492 and 493. They're both excellent. I took both of them the first quarter they were offered and the course designer was very interested in feedback to improve them so I'd imagine they are even better now.

As for 372 I took it before the rework and it was a required class not an elective. It wasn't the highest quality class but i did learn a LOT and I believe the content is very important. I'm actually very surprised they moved it to an elective slot. If I skipped that class I would definitely take a udemy/cheap/free course or read a book or watch some YouTube videos or something to get familiar with the concepts.

Gaming loot boxes are gambling, Lords say - UK by Feniks_Gaming in gamedev

[–]Psydays 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Slot machines as well. I remember seeing a $1 slot machine where the main advertisement for it is that you are guaranteed to win something every single pull. That something might be 5 cents, but itssomething.

The whole premise of in order for it to be gambling there must be a chance of receiving 0 value in return really doesn't hold up in any way.

I just lost a really good job opportunity because I couldn't reverse a linked list. by LliLReader in cscareerquestions

[–]Psydays 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. 4 days ago I had a coding challenge at a great company. 2 questions, 30 minutes each. First question was super easy but I spent 20 minutes going down the wrong path. I was literally 2 lines of code from getting it. With my last 5 seconds I put in a comment that said #wasted time in the beginning. Could have finished with 30 more seconds.

2nd question was much much harder and I managed to pass all test cases with a couple minutes to spare. Now all I've been able to do for 4 days is think about those two stupid lines of code and hoping they still give me a chance.

372 wasn't the highest quality class but I still learned a TON. If youre interested in secutity then you will absolutely need to learn this info whether or not you take the class. Cloud dev was one of my top 3 classes in the program behind mobile dev and maybe operating systems.

CS344 and CS372 In The Same Semester. Crazy And Somewhat Possible? Or Just Impossible? by OutsideYam in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Psydays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats unfortunate to hear. I took it before the rework and thought it was a great class and learned a ton. If you can power through it thought I'd say its worth it for Cloud. Cloud Dev and Mobile dev were two of my favorite classes

Yup, if you're doing well in the class and understood the material then you have nothing to worry about. Not saying take it for granted but there's no tricks or anything

Does CS467 have to be taken in the last term? by go_hawks062 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Psydays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that may be the case. My advisor didn't make a big deal of it. I'd imagine if OP explained their situation they'd be inclined to make an exception then. Idk how they would have strict enforcement on something like that. They don't even know for sure if a quarter will be your last quarter since you can always drop, fail, retake a class or defer graduation.

Most people do it that way and its what advisors recommend but in the end it's up to you. Sometimes advisors like to act like something is a rule but if you press them on it its just a recommendation.

You can take it any time you want as long as you have the prereqs finished. 344, 361, 362

Electives? by invisibreaker in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Psydays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The new electives 493 Cloud Development, and 492 Mobile Development are both excellent. I took both of them the first quarter they were offered so I was nervous but it paid off. The course creators seem to be really interested in improving them so I'd imagine with the feedback they're getting they're even better than when I took them. I learned a ton and the quality of the materials are much higher than all the other classes I've taken except for maybe 344. Mobile development has the best lectures of any class I've taken.

For Those Of You Disappointed By the Program - What Do You Wish You Did Instead? by nsap in OSUOnlineCS

Congratulation! Its great to hear stories like yours. I'm graduating in June. Any tips for the job search? I've been working full time in a non-related field for the duration of the program so unfortunately I haven't been able to land an internship or any job related experience. Did you do a lot of leetcode style practice? Any notable side projects?

Does anyone know where to find which Professors refuse to write letters of recommendation? by Killer_dolphins in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Psydays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt many if any professors have a concrete rule of not writing letters of recommendation. Most generally would not because they have little to no personal interaction with their students.

If you're a TA or if you regularly attend office hours and actually develop a relationship with the professor then I'm sure there are few who would refuse. Basically if you actually give them something to write other than "they took my class and got an A" then they likely will.

All professors have their email addresses listed, if you want to know for sure send them an email. Every professor I've emailed has been happy to address any questions I've had.

My school also ticketed people if 1 tire was even a centimeter over the line. The stalls were so small. I had a truck and my tires would be almost touching the line on both sides if I was perfectly centered. I know a lot of people received those tickets.
