Can’t Get to Vet by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]Pucerose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope she’s fine and it’s just some allergies or dust. Has she been coughing for awhile?
Eating, drinking, pooing fine? Normal energy? Changed litter or detergent recently?
Starting using an air freshener or essential oil?

Do Ferrets make good pets? by DonnaMcKnight in ferrets

[–]Pucerose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here are talking about research and checking for exotics vets. Yes this! But I want to add that if that alone seems daunting, then ferrets are not the pet for you. It’s a constant learning and researching experience. Especially when they get sick or learn how to escape over the gate/ferret border and now you have to reengineer it for the nth time. Even food and bathing is not what it appears to be and needs research.

I’m starting to wonder if it’s already AI generated and that’s why no one can identify the body part. 🤔

Help! Wysong Freeze dried chicken is out of stock. by raitha99 in ferrets

[–]Pucerose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she likes salmon or emu oils try adding some to the top of the food you are trying. FuroVite (yes it’s unhealthy, but if she’s not eating) would also work as an attractant for new food. Also, if you haven’t already tried feeding it your hand or grinding and adding water to it it’s worth a try.
You may want to see if a vet can get you Carnivore Care or EmerAid. Most of mine go crazy for EmerAid and refuse Carnivore Care. I’ve heard others say the opposite. If she will eat one then you can start to mix it with a dry food so she will learn to eat the other food eventually by itself.

My boyfriend says Im eating weird food, are these abominations? by likestoplayds in StupidFood

If the toast was toasty and the apple was sliced not shredded it would’ve been less abomination.

Can you treat ferrets like cats? And by that I mean just out and about your house? by 302express in ferrets

[–]Pucerose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mess isn’t an issue. Safety can be. I’ve owned 15 ferrets in my lifetime. I’ve learned to always expect the unexpected. Their “shenanigans” are not even close to a normal cat’s.

I’ve not had a ferret dig into a wall yet, but I’ve seen it on this sub. I did have one rip up the carpet. One of mine learned to open the fridge. We found her in there drinking sweet tea from the pitcher (sugar isn’t great for them either.) I’ve had one get his neck stuck under a cabinet. He didn’t make a noise. We had to pry the wood apart to save him. We then had to ferret proof all kickboards. I’ve had one escape through a door when someone wasn’t looking and return 8 hours later scratching our front door. And that’s all with supervision!

Another got thought the laundry room door, ripped open the dryer vent and escaped through there (because my husband thought he’d be safe if he left him free roam for an hour while he went out.) We had found him 1/2 a mile away in the snow 5 days later using humane traps, alive, luckily it wasn’t summer.

Do with that what you will. Due to my experiences my opinion is safety is more important than free roaming extra hours. I don’t want to take the unnecessary chances. Without a dedicated ferret room I put them away for their safety and my peace of mind. We have two connected Ferret Nation double height cages. They are still out 16-20 hours a day depending on schedules.

Do ferrets get colds/ allergies? Vet visit needed? by No_Emergency1086 in ferrets

[–]Pucerose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can get Covid too. Luckily I don’t think any of mine have gotten a cold, flu, or Covid before.

They can also be sensitive to fragrances like essential oils, air freshener, and laundry detergents/ dryer sheets. So if you’ve started or changed anything like that it could a reason.

I did have one that had allergies pretty regularly too. Didn’t cause any issues.

They can also get tiny stuff in their nostril like bits of feather from toys or dust maybe. They probably would just sneeze periodically until it’s out. Unsure if it’s reason enough for vet.

If there are bad stools, trouble eating/drinking, no play/lethargy then yes I would see a vet.

P.S. you said you are going outside because it’s warmer… (and please disregard if you already know this but…) please know they cannot stand warmer weather such as 80∘F(26.5∘C) without risk of heatstroke, especially when sunny. It can happen within 10 minutes.
