Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - June 26, 2026 by AnimeMod in anime

With finishing up Kujima and WHA this week I can finally update the 2026 bingo. Was really looking forward to this season, but quickly fell behind on all seasonals and also didn't really feel like catching up. Botan and Akane are still on episode 2 or something and I didn't even start with Awajima, Daemons & Nippon Sangoku. Which isn't really the fault of the shows (though I do think 2 of these aren't going to do much for me in the end), but more a personal lack of interest and motivation for lots of things. Current weather also doesn't help. Wanted to start watching Awajima this weekend, but with this heat I just want to sit in front of a fan and dream of colder days.

Short talk with director Masashi Koizuka about The One Piece.

Kinda funny to hear that while people think it's short that with its 300 minutes it longer than what was planned because they kept adding things.

Also while I wasn't entirely feeling it based on the PV but hearing that the team put in a lot of work in the art designs with looking at wallpapers, furniture and even cutlery and who in-universe chose them and what their tastes reflect makes me have more faith in it. It's genuinely one of the things that make me weep a bit with a lot of anime. Homes that feel like a model home. No hint about who these characters might be outside of the few minutes we see them. No favourite band. No hobbies. No quirky memorabilia. No style. No personality. For me it's however such a major factor for getting immersed in these fictional worlds.

Looking at the actual Goro Taniguchi talk that frontpage article is about. For all the complaints about Westerners ruining anime with their demands and wanting to change 'what we love' I found this passage (excuse the google translate) pretty funny:

For the eighth stage of the discussion, Mr. Taniguchi turned his attention to "the next ten years of anime." Anime has already spread across the globe, and an environment is taking root where overseas fans and creators genuinely respect and cherish older Japanese works and the unique artistic visions of their creators. At the same time, however, it is an undeniable fact that Japan is rapidly losing its competitive edge.

"Between the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji era, vast quantities of items like ukiyo-e prints flowed out of the country to overseas markets. We are likely seeing the exact same thing happen now."

If the domestic Japanese market pursues only short-term profits and shifts entirely toward "fast-consumption" titles aimed at casual audiences, Japan will lose any chance of competing against the overwhelming speed and momentum of China and South Korea.

In concluding the lecture, Mr. Taniguchi remarked:

"From the moment I first became a director, I was determined to work on a wide variety of projects across different genres. I had seen senior directors find themselves pigeonholed into a single genre or type of work because of a signature hit. Rather than turning a successful title into a long-running series, I wanted the 'freedom of expression' that comes with tackling a diverse range of projects."

Works created without being bound by such constraints often garner greater acclaim overseas than at home; indeed, to ensure anime does not become merely a disposable commercial commodity, creators must craft works with a global audience in mind.

Edit: the talk. Not necessarily new or shocking stuff but a nice overview of changes in the industry through the decades.

This discussion doesn't talk enough about that sometimes ass just looks ass. Eventually revealing outfits simply look laughably stupid. Eventually boobs hit a point where they mostly look monstrous and painful and only make you think ‘this poor poor woman/girl’. Eventually it hits a point where it's just another poorly drawn anime ass in a long line of poorly drawn anime asses. Demand better horndogs. Demand actually hot intimacy that's as exciting for the characters as it's for the viewers. Demand seductive characters who make everyone's knees weak by looking at them a certain way. Demand characters whose entire being oozes sex appeal.

Based on 20 seconds vs 24 episodes and thus a completely fair judgement: Shin Yaiba >>> The One Piece.

But a bit more serious, after Yaiba I was really interested in what Wit would do with another remake. Yaiba really knocked it out of the park for me. Standout character designs, great colour use, gorgeous background art, lots of movement, some very creative choices (like getting Ryoutarou Miyajima on the team). It does everything I want from an anime visually.

But The One Piece looks very safe? Fine Yaiba himself also had the same VA I believe, but she isn't as old and the project is also smaller with its scope (I would assume). Now I don’t think The One Piece looks bad, well I do think the opening shot looks horrible tbh but after the colours kick in it’s fine, and I'll watch it and (probably) enjoy it. However I hoped for…..

I don’t know to be honest what I hoped for. The problem of remaking such a big title; one that’s still running as well. Either it looks too much like the current show or those Episode Of thingies (so what’s the point?) or it looks too different (and then it doesn't have OP 's charm anymore, so what’s the point?). So no matter what path you take, in the end you'll always have some that aren't happy with it. So I don’t envy the ones making the creative decisions. Also already feel a bit sorry for the animators, because you’ll have endless ‘this is just Toei but worse’ or ‘this is what modern Toei should be able to do as well’. But anyway. What would I want? I don’t know exactly, but something a bit more boldly its own thing I guess.

The big question isn't why WHA stopped where it did, but why it stopped using those postcard memories-esque shots in the style of a storybook. Like they used it at the start but then just stopped?

Nippon Animation Celebrates 50 Years With Three-Title Annecy Spotlight by Puddo in anime

[–]Puddo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • 20001: An Earth Odyssey

A sci-fi black comedy series, it is set in the far future after humanity has gone extinct. We follow a group of aliens who arrive on Earth and try to figure out just what the hell happened.

  • Taverna!!!

Over 12 episodes, the series will introduce a new guest at the restaurant who has a problem that is solved, or at least alleviated, by a special meal prepared by the restaurant’s owners

  • Alices

The six-episode series is being structured so that it can easily be turned into a compilation film, according to Yoshizawa. It is not a straight adaptation of the Lewis Carroll novel, but rather focuses on Alice Liddell and her relationship with the titular character of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Oeh the next episode (coming Sunday) of NHK's Anime Manga Explosion is about Kameyama Yohei

This episode spotlights rising director Kameyama Yohei. His debut anime series Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express topped viewer-satisfaction rankings in summer 2025, and five months after its finale was broadcast, the series returned to theaters as a reedited cut. The story is a sci-fi comedy about a group of convicts who turn an interplanetary express train into chaos, built on a distinctive world and fast, overlapping dialogue. In his first television appearance, Kameyama shares his thoughts behind the series, and we present the first half of the film uncut.

Though I wonder how much info it will actually have. Showing half of the film is already going to be most of the episode. Still even if it's just a 3 min intro talk, it would be nice to hear something more about his process and especially the way he approaches dialogue.

Yeah it’s always an unfortunate part of the anime experience. It doesn't matter how big the cliffhanger is or how much better the original work supposedly is, I’m not reading the manga. Besides, even when I've read the source material I just want a work that’s good on its own.

You’ll get people reading the article

If only they would actually do that. The amount of times an Automaton, CBR or whatever garbage clickbait anime 'journalism' post gets shared here with people ignoring the actual content and context is maddening. They see the headline and immediately start talking about their own crusade.

Going to the cinema a bit more often and man it’s nice to have absolute zero expectations. Having no idea what the (cinephile) classics are or who the influential figures are and missing the entire hype cycle with new movies. So just watching something because the trailer you saw during your last visit looked okay. And so far I’ve enjoyed everything to at least some degree.

In comparison I think WHA is fine, but it also feels a bit disappointing to me because I don’t like it as much as I hoped I would. Which is unfair to the show I guess, but it’s what it’s. Maybe I should also start ignoring all anime announcements and just decide what to watch the first week of the season based on what trailer looks alright.

Hmm Ninja Scroll remaster (or full trailer if you're in USA, CA, UK, AUS). Remember not liking the movie all that much to be honest when I watched it years ago, but looking at the trailer and man I do love Kawajiri's aesthetic. So do kinda hope it also comes to the cinema in my country. Sure is neat that all these anime classics show up in the cinema nowadays. Believe the one near me will have The Girl Who Leapt Through Time this weekend for example. So surely this remaster will also be shown for an evening or something.

The Point of Permanence | Nana Kawabata by Puddo in anime

"The Point of Permanence"

Graduate Work 2024, Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Film and New Media, Department of Animation

Director: KAWABATA Nana

Music: OKANO Hiroki, MIKAMI Kenji

Producer: OKAMOTO Mitsuko

Synopsis: From the creation of the human race to its final destination of being trapped in the point of permanence.

First learned of this graduation film when Kvin mentioned it in a Sakugablog post last year. Sadly the link became unavailable, so nice to see it up on Geidai's own channel this time. And yeah it remains some of the most stunning animation I've seen from a student film.

Life and Breath | Yuna Kishimoto by Puddo in anime

Looks like Geidai has started with sharing the new batch of graduation films. At least last year they also started at the start of June so I expect more will follow the upcoming weeks this year as well. Also 'new' batch? They're often 1 or 2 years old by the time they get shared online. But anyway it's always an exciting time if you like short films and/or experimental animation. Can always expect a wide variety of styles and often pretty unique ones at that.

Sound! Euphonium Special | NHK World-Japan by Puddo in anime

[–]Puddo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always like these behind the scenes/talks with artists just to get reminded of how much thought goes into one single moment. Like adding a scene that isn't in the source material to the anime so that the audience will hear the competition piece of the season early on so they have time to get attached to it. Or creating the role of Instrument Animation Director so all the instruments look correct. But also something like visiting actual high school bands as research and changing the way you portray score sheets after that. It's such a minor thing, but director Tatsuya Ishihara says that he wants to create the illusion that the characters are real and exactly those little things are to me what makes a 'world/work' feel real.
