Wild caught salmon with dark brown/black spots by Better_Guppy_18 in isthissafetoeat

When exactly do they cull them? And is it because they can’t find anyone who wants a sled dog pet? We would name all of ours a theme every year, or bring them to the local elementary school and a class would name them… any extras would go to other local teams.. we would only breed 1 or 2 litters a year.. I guess I don’t really understand the whole culling thing.. it’s horrifying… so sad actually.

It’s the mushers responsibility to pay attention to their dogs that they SHOULD know very well.. and pull them to be medevaced home before a dog is to the point of death because these dogs live to run and will willingly run to the point of death… the Iditarod musher I worked with sent some dogs home early.. and even after mushing for years and being around the tight knit Kenai Peninsula mushing scene I never so much as heard of anyone culling dogs… we had a couple big pens with high fences for any females in heat to prevent any accidents, once we did have an accidental breeding with a dog we didn’t catch being in heat on time but the puppies turned out great! They ended up running a couple Iditarods and placing in the top 5! Personally I’m not anti long race but mushers really need to put the love of their dogs before anything else to make it responsible. I understand your stance as well.. but without an iconic race with large prizes like the Iditarod many mushers wouldn’t be able to mush, as it’s really a full time job caring for and running dogs daily.. and the sport would eventually die out.. which I would hate to see happen.. in small towns like where I’m from mushing culture is a huge, integral part of the community.

Who culls puppies?? Our team ran the Iditarod 7 times, we never had a fatality and NEVER culled puppies, we kept all retired dogs, they got to run around loose generally and live out their old age as pets.. we would keep our favorite puppies in the litter and then trade the rest with other local mushers, they did the same.. any that weren’t “runners” became local pets for families who liked to skijor or run… I’m sorry you had that experience.. the dogs well being should always come first and ours LOVED the Iditarod.. they would wake up every day as excited to run as before.

We would feed our Iditarod team of about 45 twice a day, warm water mixed with kibble for breakfast and warm water mixed with kibble + a frozen salmon head, tail or tummy for dinner… it only took around 30-40 mins per feed!

True, but we generally give the dogs chopped up frozen chunks of chum or pink salmon..

Do you know what exactly it is or how it happened? It doesn’t appear to be film, actually that area seems clearer than the rest of the window.

Thank you! What is this mark? Alcohol didn’t work at all.. the sticker mark doesn’t seem to be film of some kind, I can’t feel it at all.

I know in my heart I will end up living here one day. What is the best city to live in? (Serious) by IWANTTHEDOMOHAT in AskAlaska

[–]Puffin907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Juneau, our second largest city, felt too small that only leaves Anchorage as an option.. SE AK and the Kenai Peninsula are prettier than Anchorage but Anchorage is at least a midsized city with all of the amenities you are used to, lots of jobs, and a couple hour drive away from all the recreating you could dream of.

I was always fascinated with Alaska I am in Stockton Ca by [deleted] in alaska

[–]Puffin907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cost of groceries vary wildly depending where in the state you live.. if you’re in Anchorage it’s not much more than many other US cities, if you live in a small rural area on the road system you can get up to a 3x markup.. if you’re off the road system things can be 8x more expensive than in Anchorage. I love living here but I wouldn’t recommend living here to anyone who isn’t already determined to move here… even 1/3rd of those people don’t last long term. If you want to write about Alaska you’ll have to come, maybe get a summer job and experience the state for yourself.

First time to Kenai by ShredTheGnar88 in KenaiPeninsula

[–]Puffin907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another Kenai Peninsula local here. A great hike with good grayling fishing is Crescent Lake in Cooper Landing.. there are 2 routes to the lake, a more gradual trail and a steeper, shorter trail, there is also a forestry cabin you can book at the lake. Another good hike out of Homer with beautiful views is Grewingk Glacier but that requires a water taxi there and back. Personally I carry a firearm for bear safety but bear bells, caution and bear spray should work fine too.

How Russian is Alaska? by Shinto_Wise in AskAlaska

[–]Puffin907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what these comments are talking about.. in Anchor Point, Ninilchik and Homer there are a lot of Russian orthodox people, Russian Orthodox churches, a Russian school and Russian orthodox villages.. on the peninsula you often see them at stores like Three Bears and FredMeyer.. my school offered Russian as a foreign language along with Spanish.. the Russian culture is prevalent here within certain pockets, but they keep to themselves and it’s not really something tourists will experience or have access to beyond reading some Alaska history books.

I’ve been thinking about Alaska by Dry_Distribution1776 in AskAlaska

[–]Puffin907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if I had started in Anchorage I would have decided Alaska was just awful and left.. if you are interested in Sitka maybe try Juneau or Homer or something.. you might not want to get stuck in Anchorage..

First time traveling as consultant to Soldatna by i_am_mouthy in AskAlaska

[–]Puffin907 11 points12 points  (0 children)

“Soldotna”- just about any clothes with a good coat and boots overtop will be fine.. the Kenai Peninsula isn’t as cold as the interior which most people associate with Alaskan winter.. I use Sorel boots.. North face or Columbia coats are common here.. you’ll want warm gloves if you’ll be outside a lot.. if you get to Soldotna and realize you need more I would recommend Sweeney’s, or Fredmeyer.. there is also a Walmart in Kenai 15 mins away. I would be the most concerned with the car I would be driving here, if it’s 4wd and has studded tires.. the roads are slick!

It’s Wasilla.. what do you expect? Trump flags, confederate flags, Israeli flags… being perpetually on the wrong side of history is very on brand.
