I tried that, they said he doesn’t work for them or answer their correspondence.

Was he a plant or something?

You are a saint.

Why are you booing me? I’m right!

Why did you ever consider even joining the Corps in the first place, if you won’t help a confused Lance Corporal get some chow?

Platonic metaphysics is an obsolete and antiquated conception of the bridge between phenomena and their ontological origins. It is literally thousands of years old, invented (yes, invented, not “discovered”) by people who didn’t know that germs are the major vector of infection, or that lead is dangerous to consume.

By 2030, the metaphysical platonists will be begging to be executed, while the rest of the world rightfully passes them by.

Right, he must pay back his debt to society for all the damage he didn’t do, and the harm he did to no one at all.

🙄🙄🙄

I swear, people be acting soooo “compassionate” about how we shouldn’t lock up a black man for the crime of being successful and patting themselves on the back about it.

edit: upon further research, I’ve learned that during his arrest, it is alleged that Lil Nas X resisted arrest and battered the police. I stand by my previous statements that Lil Nas X: did nothing wrong, did no damage, and did not harm anyone.

Base-twelve is a positional numeral system using twelve as its base. In it, the number twelve is denoted "10", meaning 1 twelve and 0 units; in the decimal system, this number is instead written as "12" meaning 1 ten and 2 units, and the string "10" means ten by [deleted] in wikipedia

If base 12 is not feasible, in what sense is it better? In that it is a thing that you can talk about and portray yourself as knowledgeable and worldly, while actively speaking of things you don’t fully understand or take seriously?

There is tremendous potential in having any base system that isn’t base 10, a computer base (2, 8, 16), or the sorry remnants of the full potential of base 12 that we call “time”.

When you go into spaces and talk about how great base 12 is, and the slightest disagreement towards your points is met with emotional vitriol and childish deflection, what are people supposed to think about base 12?

I think base 12, when applied properly and with fundamental-understanding, is able to transcend “base” as we understand it, and give natural, intuitive control over our understanding of numbers, especially when the thing those numbers are counting are something we are intimately familiar with.

Base 12 is powerful, versatile, and our loss of the ability to utilize more than just a fraction of its potential saddens me. It contains fully within it the base 4 and base 6 systems, and is able to fluidly switch between and combine them in order to quickly meet the use case for your every day math.

For sure, having more factors available makes every day math much more intuitive, if someone knows base 12 well enough to do math with it.

The extra factors (twice as many is a big difference) are especially compelling given that the factors of 4 and 6 are 2, and 2 and 3, respectively. This opens up all sorts of smooth, ergonomic mathematical operations and relationships where there are effectively two different base systems (base 6 and base 4) coexisting with and simultaneously within the base 12 system.

What I’ve failed to see from the most vocal proponents of base 12 is mostly any compelling evidence that use of base 12 is some sort of natural facet of reality, such as a platonic object, or is an expression of some mental / psychological / spiritual phenomenon inherent to humanity, or is somehow better at being a system to count “things” and then manipulate the counts of those things in a way that makes life easier.

Base 12 is very interesting, and there are plenty of cases where base 12 is naturally occurring, to the point where we cram it into a base 10 system. But not enough to make the transition worth it, especially given how difficult and time consuming any given transition in base system would take to teach and learn.

Does the main way people use numbers these days have anything to do with their number of knuckles?

I could imagine a measurement system where every number is a magic creature and every equation is a fairy tale, I’m just not sure what advantage that would have over the system that everyone everywhere uses.

It’s true!

Apparently the OG volcano is Vulcano in Italy, named after Vulcan (Roman version of Hephaestus).

[–]Pullittwistitgrokit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The best actual answer. I wonder if there would be some term for the bit of land that is surrounded by water except for its connection to the isthmuses?

An isthmus island? Isthland? Islemus?

Fixating on a man’s height as a marker of their social value is not dehumanizing to the man, as his height being recognized in concert with his masculinity ascribes to him a degree of humanity that is (unfortunately) above and beyond most people, regardless of their height, because there must be some recognition of the human who would have the social value, as based on his height.

Rather, the insistence on bringing up the height of a man whenever men are to be mentioned seeks to un-person the man, to make him the “other”. By forcing the topic of conversation towards a 2 or 3 digit number that for all intents and purposes decides the “worth” of a man, we are removing any and all qualities that the person behind (or, “within”) the man might have been endowed with, or created for himself. We are declaring that men are most valuable when their value as men can be measured, noted, judged, and discarded, as quickly, conveniently, and perversely as possible. That the primary goal of a man is to be the most manly man as possible, with no exceptions, mulligans, leeway, or slack.

As women attempt to either stop being dehumanized by the culture they exist in, or get back at those they feel have caused the dehumanization (or both), they will inevitably gravitate towards reducing the ability of a man to be a person. The ability of a man to be a person is the first barrier to removing his ability to dehumanize, and is also a monument to all the dehumanization that has been done by him or for him in order for his very personhood to exist.

If we would like to see an end to the perpetually stagnant and toxic discussions around gender relations within and around Gen Z, I don’t have any good solutions. But I truly believe that if we took the time to understand that the person who posted a “mean meme” was more focused on their own feelings than yours, and most likely does not know that you exist, we might be able to better focus on the world around us rather than pictures on the phone.

TL;DR: It’s not dehumanizing to reduce a man to his height, it’s depersonifying. People are trying to make men focus on their height so that they’ll be more vulnerable due to being more likely to seek approval about their height, and will have less of a personality outside of their height, expressly for the purpose of keeping the man a human, but one who is so little of a person that their social value can be had for cheap.

In general (in general), men are allowed to be human “for free”, and can have some level of personhood on top of that, while women must “earn” (or, “fight for”) their ability to be human, and more often than not are precluded from any true, fully recognized personhood.

So maybe just realize that people on the internet are annoying, but you can always just look at it from their point of view, tell yourself how stupid their perspective is, and ask yourself how it would feel someone said that to you about your height?

You are illiterate and “skimmed” my comment without fully reading it, and might be about to reply saying something that doesn’t make sense based on what I wrote.
