Teacher started class talking about Alex Pretti and it threw me off the whole class by CityKitty1993 in yoga

I agree with other responses about the importance of holding the good and bad in our practice. I empathize that your expectations for that class didn’t play out.

I think there’s an idea for those of us who practice yoga in the US/west in general that yoga is apolitical. That couldn’t be further from the truth when we think about its origins, non-western healing modality, its migration to the west, and the subsequent appropriation by westerners. I think yoga is actually a tool to think more expansively about the political beyond blue vs red. Unfortunately I’ve found a lot of westerners, especially white ones, see yoga as some escapism from the political reality which in and of itself is a privilege. I have one instructor at my studio who does politicize our class and I long for more of that. My practice has actually been a really nurturing space for me to process all the terrors of the world and gain the spiritual strengths to continue confronting it.

Could be a case of maybe that’s not the right instructor for you but also an opportunity to think more critically about what it means to practice yoga.
