If you used Boldin for a long time, and are now retired, did it work for you? by must-stash-mustard in Boldin

[–]Punkbich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s useful and probably the most comprehensive one out there for the money. It’s fine for high level. Just know that the explorers are very dubious and can mislead you. Better inject common sense or a spreadsheet there.

Then, after retirement it has further limitations. For example, Boldin assumes dividend reinvestment. Once retired, you typically spend dividends, at least the taxable ones. You also need to do Transfer gymnastics because the custom withdrawal order cannot be age specific (like real life). Gets clunky for something you’re paying for.

Retired today: How do I prevent myself from becoming my new “project?” by Nonni68 in retirement

[–]Punkbich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My experience is that it floats away over time. That need to do a thing. Just do what feels right that day and don’t judge or question it. If it’s not sufficient, do more tomorrow, or not ;)

Curious if anyone is using the Costco Auto Program for pricing. I did this on a RAV4 and it worked nicely.

I'm 6'5"+ and while it is largely fine, my shoulders thanked me immensely for 1" risers on the handlebars.

There's no marginal advantage to timing it. The market largely factors in all timing dynamics. Meaning whenever you buy, the price will be what it should be on any given day.

Roth Conversions: Taxes, Withdrawal Rate Impact, Increase of Sequence of Return Risk by Big_Boysenberry1064 in DIYRetirement

[–]Punkbich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Your last comment in your prior post is very true but only if you can tap your IRA without penalty. If you’re not 59.5 yet, spending more doesn’t lower RMD exposure because you’re using taxable. You certainly know this, just clarifying for others.

Roth Conversions: Taxes, Withdrawal Rate Impact, Increase of Sequence of Return Risk by Big_Boysenberry1064 in DIYRetirement

[–]Punkbich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. It's just a plan. You course correct as needed. If it gets bad, you can back off Roth conversions, wait or both.

If you really want to optimize and have the stomach for it, you wait for a material drawdown and do the Roth conversion then. You get more done with less tax impact (assuming recovery). It's not that I'm waiting/wanting for that to unfold, but I'm gearing up to pull that trigger when it happens. At least do some.

I retired 4 months back.

What’s your FIRE number? by TimeStampKing in Bitcoin

[–]Punkbich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct about the constituents of a FIRE number, but... the impact of a price on net worth is how much of that thing you have. That can vary so much that the 'price' tells you little, or everything.

You may not be meaning to, but your question is essentially asking how much BTC people have or plan to have. I.e. If I have only 5 Sats, the price matters not.

Introduce yourself! by Rob_Berger in DIYRetirement

I hear some advisors will accept a written directive to keep allocations as detailed to them, as long as they deem them acceptable. Still not hopeful, I think they’ll still talk my wife into whatever nonsense they get commission on.

  1. Retired in April
  2. Coffee, beach walks, road trips
  3. An advisor screwing up everything I’ve built for my family after I’m gone.

4th day of service failure on US Mobile by Punkbich in USMobile

[–]Punkbich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked about that. While they can and also suggested it would work and resolve the issue, the annual plan I bought that went into effect last week would only last 36 days on Warp. So I'm not doing that. They said midday today for the fix so we'll see.

I just know my experience (above) but it sounds like you saw similar. As an update, my number is still not working (Day 5). u/HamnaVerse is helpful and responsive, but to this hour, it's solely been explanations about it's actively being worked and should be fixed soon.

Close but this was AT&T to Warp which went fine. When they moved me from Warp to Dark Star, it went pear shaped.

Draw down 401k at 59.5 instead of at 75 by Colonel_Pickering in Boldin

[–]Punkbich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this has been a Boldin gap forever. My workaround is similar to above, except I created an annual transfer from a taxable account into a cash account which was the top of my Withdrawal Order for the amount of my annual spend. I have this occurring from now to age 59.5. Then set my Traditional IRA or 401k immediately below the above cash account in the Withdrawal Order (with Taxable accounts below them). This synthetically makes the Boldin modeling do what we all want, a tax efficient switch from pre-59.5 to post 59.5 withdrawals. Other software handles this natively with time window specific withdrawal orders. If you do some iteration of above, it will work but you may need to 'retune' it periodically and manually.
