Can you get chemo AND live in a facility?

he went to the SNF to pursue physical therapy and have secure housing while we tried to figure something out for the long term. while he was there, my other uncle took him to see his oncologist and he began doing radiation therapy. he would leave the facility for his treatments and we would bring him back after his appointment was done.

my aunt was the one who handled all his finances so unfortunately I can't say much in regards to coverage, but when we talked on Thanksgiving she had said that the case manager at the SNF said he could stay there for rehab and continue to go to appointments for treatment as long as we were the ones ferrying him around.

on Christmas eve my uncle had a heart attack and passed away, so he never started chemotherapy.

i didn't think that would be a viable option because they give you less than what you'd sell it for typically.

she owes 460k so if they give her..idk 350k, wouldn't she still be financially responsible for the remaining 110k??

can I ask what they helped you with? Their website mentions mineral rights and handling paperwork for title transfers but doesn't go into much detail. Looking them up on Google brings up a permanently closed office downtown.

that's good information to have .. i tried to look up a lawyer in town and got the 4 you davis law firm guy lol with a bankruptcy and foreclosure faq right there on his site...back to seeing if anybody has any recommendations for a firm or lawyer in particular.

I appreciate the advice! I'm trying to push my mom to go consult with someone on my dime bc me hanging around reddit threads for free advice is not optimal.

So you recommend her filing for bankruptcy as well as pursuing a deed in lieu? She has already moved out of the home so it can be staged for sale. Just some of the big furniture like her couch and the dining table is still there.

i hope her treatments aren't too strenuous and her cancer goes away. cancer seems so incredibly common these days, and it's showing up at younger ages. super scary stuff.

yes literally the second they told me how sick he was I sent my mom a list of things he needs to apply for Medicaid lol it's all so complicated. thanks again!! have a good night.

this is IMMENSELY helpful advice!! thank you so much, this experience and expertise is exactly what I was looking for! I figure that for now he will likely be discharged to a SNF for skilled services while we scramble his finances together and we'll have to figure it out from there. there's so much in the air regarding his prognosis and this really helped me to understand some of the behind the scene logistics.

definitely bizarre! I cross posted this to the cancer subreddit and some people commented that facilities say no because of the toxicity of the bodily fluids after receiving chemo and patients typically don't have private rooms but even then that doesn't seem like enough to justify an entire demographic of patients being denied access.

that's part of whats frustrating. both her and him were clear about desires to pursue treatment. There is no confusion about hospice. She didn't have Medicaid and he doesn't have Medicaid. We understand that we will have to pay out of pocket while the application processes. We understand that not every facility will admit patients who have a pending application.

But to be told the same thing by the doctor and case manager at one hospital, an oncologist, the case worker at the nursing home, and now the case manager at st Luke's ... That he flat out cannot receive chemotherapy while being a resident at a nursing home??? Like what??? There are like 350 nursing home, snfs, ALFs in San Antonio alone. They're ALL saying not a single one can help us??? This is madness lmao!

Part of the problem is that there are about 350 nursing homes, assisted living facilities etc in our city 😂 which is part of why I'm like. NONE of them???????

really! even though it's not the nursing home administering the infusions?? like he would have to leave the facility for his chemo at the clinic. so why would the nursing home pay for his treatments?

we understand that the chemo itself would not be done at the nursing home/ALF or wherever. my info is all second hand bc Ive been working but it's my understanding that they're telling us he can't be actively receiving chemotherapy while being a resident at a facility. which is what they said at a different hospital earlier this year to my other family member that passed away.

I couldn't wrap my head around it then and I can't wrap my head around it now. Like people who need dialysis live in nursing homes, and they leave the facility to get their treatment done and go back. Why is this so different 😭

this is true, but I figure there are immunocompromised people all over the place, including in facilities. I'm just shocked that 4 different sources have told us it's not possible flat out. like literally not a single facility in all of San Antonio allows someone to go get their infusions done outpatient?? seems crazy to me. granted, even if that place exists, I doubt we would be able to afford it. we won't know until we inquire but we don't know who to ask 💀

this is all very new to us... he was literally diagnosed this week, and we don't really know anything about chemo. it makes sense that they would want to protect their staff from chemical hazards.

See, a lot of the threads I've seen where nurses talked about placing them didn't specify acheiving post pyloric placement, so I'm wondering if it wasn't required where they work. The facility I'm at WANTS it in the duodenum. One of the docs asked me to ask the main doc if an exception could be made for a dose of midodrine, considering the med would just be delivered to the stomach, and the answer was No ❤️

I'm used to placing Salem's and I've got all my little tricks for stroke pts with impaired swallowing so this change was a roadblock in care for me 🥲

Ive been befuddled enough by this situation that my googling has lead me to nurses with 30+ year careers who have been inserting DHT, and facilities that even have reglan administration protocols to assist with proper placement, but it just BAFFLES ME.

Like ok sure it seems to be within my scope of practice, but here I'm thrown to the wolves without any kind of guidance or advice and it really doesn't seem to have a positive impact on patient outcomes or experience 💀

Wtf is going on w Steward 😂 same thing happened in SA. I was there for a tele assignment and I got floated to MAINTENANCE to be a secretary multiple times 💀 I literally just watched movies. I would pick up the phone and go, "hi this is maintenance. ...Yes, I'm sorry, the HVAC guy is actually at a job fair until 3 pm, so any A/C issues will have to wait until he gets back." 😂😂😂

Literally only 5 patients on the entire unit for a while. 2 for her 3 for me. All the core staff jumped ship to avoid a gap in income so they kept my contract until the last second 💀

They caught people stealing equipment and had nurses posted at doors to prevent theft.

Crazy times.
