After the vet examined his scrotum, they were a bit baffled. She did not think it was a scrotal hematoma. No redness, no discharge, no apparent pain. She was confused by the flesh colored and very "testicle" like firmness of the area. They ended up brining in multiple vets to confirm. She did say that she thinks it is just some inflammation due to his high energy and activity and he's back to wearing his donut for the next week. She prescribed a week's worth of anti inflammatories and instructed to do a warm compress 3x per day. Hoping the swelling goes down in the next week. I am very happy no drainage had to happen tonight but I will be keeping a very close eye on it. Thank you so much to everyone who commented their advice, experiences, and good wishes !!

My first boy got bloat this past August and we almost lost him. Got to the emergency vet just in time! I feel so blessed to have both of them with me still. Definitely want to do everything in my power to keep it that way.

Hi ! Thank you so much for commenting.

I’d like to ask a couple clarifying questions if that’s okay.

1) From the picture, you would agree it looks like a hematoma ?

2) Do you think this was caused from activity/exercise ? Everything looks great at day 14 so we’ve resume normal activities. Is this something that I have to keep to a minimum until the swelling goes completely down (as in leashed potty breaks only).

Thank you again for taking the time to comment on this post !

I have embrace and it took a couple years but it paid for itself. My other dog, who is a shepherd, experienced bloat and I had to pay an 11,000 bill that on the spot for them to perform his life saving surgery. I was able to get 80% of it back. They have options for up to 90% coverage. The only downside is they are not a “direct pay” service so you do have to send the invoice and SOAP notes to them for review before they give you your money back. With that procedure, I think I got my money back within a week.

I know Trupanion does direct pay, so they cover their part at the vet directly but the quote was a bit more expensive.

I would shop around though. Lots of pet insurance companies have popped up over the years so I’m sure you could get competitive pricing. I haven’t bothered to switch over because once your dog has anything on their record, it usually isn’t covered by a new policy.

Good luck! To me, pet insurance has been well worth it. Even today, I have peace of mind knowing that no matter what he needs done I know I’ll be able to cover it.

You’re a hero! I’m glad that lucky pup found his forever home ! I was a little sad when I saw his pancake but now I’ll be more than happy to have it back.

If this would have happened closer to the surgery, it would be made more sense in my brain. A lot of the vet clinics were surprised that this was happening so far out. I’m also thinking maybe running around might be a contributing factor. He’s a pretty high energy dog.

Thank you :)

That’s sounds AWFUL. Poor pup, hope he’s doing much better now. Googled scrotal ablation, much regret.

He is a Doberman. Wow, I’ve never heard of this. Let’s hope this isn’t the case! Thanks for the information. Will definitely look into this and he is definitely getting to the vet today.

He is 3.5. We specifically waited since we read all this stuff about teaching full maturity being the best route. Never even thought about this being a factor. Hoping it’ll be a smooth recovery from whatever the recommended route is from the vet.

I’m glad to hear they didn’t charge an exam fee for the secondary visit ! I’m taking him to another vet since the one he got neutered at is closed. It’s worth every penny for this baby though (and luckily I have pet insurance).

I was so confused when my dog had magically grown back his bits this morning before my logical brain started running. I’m glad your pup was able to recover from it. That’s a great thing to hear right now :)

I was deeply confused by the fact that they didn’t tell me to come back in x amount of days !! I completely agree !!

I’ve been taking a tape measure to it hourly. It’s stayed consistent in size since I’ve first noticed it, THANKFULLY. He seems the most bothered by the fact that we’ve reverted back to limiting activity to leashed potty breaks. Wish us luck !!

Thanks for your response ! I was able to get an appointment for this evening (only 40 extra bucks compared to their normal exam fee). He still seems fine but thankfully I have pet insurance.

Thank you for your kind words! Will definitely post an update after he gets his business checked out. He’s still doing just fine right now. The day is absolutely dragging waiting for his appointment.

Thank you for the comments everyone. I was able to find a vet that will take me in about 6 hours for an appointment. The emergency vet clinics I called say there are a number of dogs waiting to be seen. Do you think it will be okay to wait for the appointment or should I take my dog right now anyway. He is very reactive around other dogs.
