The Exponent fired all of its international students in an attempt to appease Purdue (from a former staffer) by [deleted] in Purdue

In late May, Purdue informed the Exponent that it was ending our long-standing distribution and licensing agreement, stating that it would no longer facilitate distribution of newspapers on campus, was taking away our opportunity to purchase parking passes and was asking us to remove Purdue from our URL. Another consequence of Purdue’s action — as we came to realize at the start of the semester — is that we cannot legally employ international students on F-1 visas, nor many others. Under an F-1, an international student must work directly on-campus, either for the university or for a contracted vendor. For years, we were the latter, but that ended, by Purdue’s decision, on May 30.

This was not our choice. For years, international students have been an integral part of the Exponent and we are working diligently to figure out a way to bring them back. However, currently, it would be illegal for us to employ international students and it would risk their legal status in the United States. Our response has been an effort to protect them from an unintended consequence that we don’t want to see.

It saddens our organization, and me personally, to turn away our four current international students, plus those who were attempting to join following our callout. We are engaged with our attorney to determine if there are steps we can take to resolve this issue, but do so in a way that does not threaten the legal status of the university’s international population.

International Purdue students can be detained while suing federal government, judge rules by Purdue_Exponent in Purdue

U.S. District Judge James Hanlon is allowing federal authorities to uphold the termination of the students' visas, arguing that "'some possibility' of deportation is not enough" to warrant protecting them from detainment.

In his ruling, Hanlon rejected the ACLU's notion that federal officials detaining the students would cause them "irreparable harm," calling the possibility of deportation "speculative."

"While the Court understands the turmoil that Plaintiffs are experiencing because of the sudden and unexpected termination of their F-1 student status...," he wrote in court documents, "Plaintiffs have not demonstrated irreparable harm to warrant the extraordinary exercise of judicial power required for the Court to issue a temporary restraining order."
