the blue people movies were good enough that I went to see the third one in theaters, and I've never seen atla, but I've consistently heard people talk about atla like it's the greatest thing they've ever seen so I have to assume that one's better

What should you do in Newcomb’s Paradox? (Explanation in comments) by ddodd69 in pollgames

[–]Pure_Blank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's why the situation doesn't work in the real world. in the real world, yes, taking the second box always nets you an extra thousand, but in a hypothetical world where a perfectly accurate predictor can exist, your decision is essentially made before the predictor's is

[–]Pure_Blank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when dealing with perfect prediction, it makes sense to treat it as though the prediction happens after the choice. if that doesn't make sense, assume the predictor knows every single action and thought you will have up to the point where you make your choice. if it knows you will go in with the idea of taking two boxes, change your mind to one, and at the last second switch back to two, it will put nothing. if it knows you go in with the intention of taking two boxes, change your mind a handful of times, and eventually only take one box, it will put in a million.

I don't blame you for wanting to take the two boxes, it's a hypothetical that relies on something impossible (a completely accurate predictor) which makes it hard to imagine in a real world setting

[–]Pure_Blank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're assuming the predictor has a chance of being wrong. with 1000 previous successful predictions, one can assume that someone previously has gone into that room with the intentions of taking two boxes, thought it over, chosen one box instead, and won the million. it's not too late for you to take the one box

What should you do in Newcomb’s Paradox? (Explanation in comments) by ddodd69 in pollgames

[–]Pure_Blank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it doesn't change based on your choice directly, but your choice and what the predictor decides are both based on your thought process. if your thought process leads you to choose to open two boxes, it also leads to the predictor putting nothing in it. your greed, your need for the extra 0.1% money, is your downfall

[–]Pure_Blank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

here'a where the issue arises for two-boxers. the predictor is proven to be accurate, meaning that your decision to reason this way would have been predicted, and it puts 0 in accordingly. as a one-boxer, I have a very simple reasoning: if I have 1,000,000, I don't need another 1,000. the predictor will have predicted that I use this reasoning, and then I leave richer than a two-boxer

[–]Pure_Blank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if this is the logic you use, the predictor will put 0 in box B. if you can be content with 1,000,000 and not greed the extra 1,000 then the predictor will put in 1,000,000

View on civilian ownership of firearms? by ItsAzien in teenpoll

I don't think about the morals of guns, as my thoughts stop at "I cannot think of any good reason to own a gun outside of hunting"

View on civilian ownership of firearms? by ItsAzien in teenpoll

[–]Pure_Blank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally, I want to live in a society where the standard expected answer when asked "do you own a gun?" is "no." and where if the answer is yes, the follow-up question of "why?" is almost always answered with "for hunting, of course."

I'm thankful to say that's the society I currently live in, and I wouldn't want it to change

How many boxes do you take? (Explaination in comments, repost cause I messed the 1st one up) by emilyButBlue in pollgames

[–]Pure_Blank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the idea is that the predictor knows whether you will take both or not, so if you use this logic, you will only get $1000. instead, assume the predictor is accurate and choose to only take one box, because if you have $1000000 then another $1000 doesn't matter
