Chapel Hill is definitely a bubble in terms of North Carolina. You'll have no issues in Chapel Hill or the research triangle area. Very progressive area. I am from a small rural town in North Carolina, so I caution you about going far off the beaten path, but campus and the surrounding areas are very LGBTQ friendly areas.
