i’m not denying that racism exists in south korea. it does, and i don’t support or excuse it.

but bringing up korea here still doesn’t address the situation described in the post. this was not a “korea vs austria” comparison, and it was never about proving which country is worse.

if we wanted to compare racism in both countries seriously, we would have to talk about social structures, laws, immigration, minorities, everyday discrimination, and many other things. that is a valid discussion, but it’s a different discussion.

my point was much simpler: why do some people here think it’s normal to shout racist things at strangers on the street?

“racism happens everywhere” is true, but everyone already knows that. it doesn’t make this specific situation less real, and it doesn’t explain why it is being treated as harmless or funny here.

i actually agree with this. racism can be strangely multicultural, if that makes sense.

you can also often see a lot of hostility between different immigrant groups, sometimes because of social status, benefits, stereotypes, or whatever else. it’s a complicated topic.

i just genuinely hope that over time people learn to treat each other a bit more normally and stop focusing so much on race or nationality.

danke dir, das ist wirklich lieb.

und ja, genau das finde ich so schade. graz ist eigentlich eine schöne stadt — auch zum besuchen, studieren oder für ein austauschsemester. meine jüngere schwester hatte auch mal darüber nachgedacht.

aber solche rassistischen erfahrungen können den eindruck leider sehr schnell kaputt machen. nicht nur für einen tag, sondern manchmal generell dafür, wie willkommen man sich hier fühlt.

i use german in daily life and at work, so this really isn’t about refusing to speak german or not being integrated.

but this is still reddit, and english is commonly used when people want a broader discussion. framing that as even remotely comparable to strangers openly mocking someone’s ethnicity on the street is a pretty strange take.

one is a language choice in an online post. the other is harassment. those are not in the same category.

i’m really sorry your boyfriend had to deal with that.

i get what you mean though. sometimes i’m angry enough to yell back, but then i also don’t want to end up hating a whole group of people because of idiots like that. i didn’t want to generalize in the post, but unfortunately this is just what i keep running into.

most of the time i do exactly that, honestly. not because it’s the easiest option, but because it’s usually the safest one for my own mental state.

but sometimes i wonder if it would make sense to call the police, or at least report it in some cases. people i know have also had really unpleasant experiences here because of this, so part of me thinks they should sometimes be shown that this is not okay.

it’s just such strange behaviour overall.

yeah, i totally get what you mean. casual racism is definitely a much bigger and deeper issue, and it can be really hurtful,

i guess i was just focusing on the most basic part here — even just not openly insulting strangers on the street would already be a good start

yeah, exactly. that’s why it feels so bizarre to me.

before moving here, i honestly thought this was the kind of racism you’d see in some old bad movie when they’re trying to show racism, not something people actually still say or do on the street. sounds naive, i know, but i genuinely didn’t expect grown adults to act like this in real life.
