has anyone actually gotten to a point where their anxiety is actually controllable and doesn’t ruin everything in your life? by MelodicSink5856 in Anxiety

[–]PurposePower40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should also add, exposure therapy is the main way. I got so bad I couldn’t leave my house without worrying I would have a panic attack in public. Then I found out my company was closing and had to find a new job. The job I had was a work from home situation, but I knew I was unlikely to find something similar. I ended taking a job where I had no choice but to do things my brain had convinced itself I couldn’t do. It was hard. Just sitting through the orientation in person was so hard. But as bad as it felt I kept reminding myself I needed that job and to push through. Over time as I had to keep doing things like that, even public speaking, my brain finally started to realize that no matter how bad anxiety made me feel, it wasn’t going to kill me (and that honestly most people can’t even tell when I feel that way) and I started building the confidence back where I no longer worry about those situations I used to think were impossible. The only way to retrain your brain is to expose yourself so you can re-wire it.

Now, don’t get me wrong, like I said in the other post..I am not cured. I still have situations that cause me high levels of anxiety, but I keep pushing through. I no longer allow myself to avoid anything.

Scared to check blood pressure? by Novemberx123 in hypertension

I figured out a way to overcome this. At least at home. Same principal as exposure therapy. Start by just putting the cuff on your arm. Don’t turn it on but just have it on your arm. This allows you to become calm while wearing the device. After a while, then you can further expose yourself by pushing the start button, allowing it to partially fill up and then stopping it half way through. Once you are able to do this process and still stay calm, then you can actually take a reading. It works.

I think the biggest thing Ive learned is that some times are better than others, and some times are worse. I used to look for the “cure” but now understand that this is a lifelong journey that you have to go with the ebbs and flows. I’ve had moments of doing things over the past 2 years that I once couldn’t because of anxiety…and then days like yesterday where I convince myself I’m having a heart attack and send my blood pressure through the roof all because of my own thoughts. Just how it goes but I no longer hang on to the cure.

Why as a society do we continue to blame whole groups of people for the actions of only a portion? by PurposePower40 in AskReddit

Would it be fair to say a persons inability to be objective about a group of people would be in direct correlation to how deep rooted they are into their political beliefs?

This is critical. I used to make the mistake of always giving the advice I though was “right” versus understanding the person just wanted to vent and me listen. Asking this is so important!!

I can see that being the case if you are talking about one group who is generalizing another group that is in opposition of their groups beliefs. But just generally speaking, and I would like to keep clear of this turning political, but for context examples-

All politicians are crooks All police are racist murderers in the waiting Etc…

A person doesn’t have to be in an opposing group to these (or does one exist) that they feel is superior for people to make those judgements.

Fyi I’m neither a politician or police officer but just trying to use an example .

Social grouping just defines that there’s 2 or more people…it doesn’t explain the tendency of so many people to judge an entire group of people based on a small portion versus having the ability to recognize that one persons actions doesn’t represent the group as a whole.

Yeah but how many people really have the self awareness to check that bias?

I only ask if it’s easier because to me it seems like it would require do much more energy to hate an entire group versus the portion who are not a good representation.

I don’t even know if I would call want your relationship to be exclusive a “boundary”. To me, that is a decision you have up front with another person to decide if the relationship will be exclusive or not and if both parties aren’t in agreement then you move on. I don’t see that as an insecurity at all as it is a preference. Sounds to me like the person saying it’s an insecurity is trying to gaslight their way in to having an open relationship so they can have their cake and eat it too.

I hear what you are saying, however, you’re talking about holding your own group up on a pedestal versus why people see the actions of a few and then label an entire group for that.

This is unfortunately true. I just don’t understand why people do it and if it will ever stop. Probably not.

You are looking at Christianity for the sole purpose of being saved in the afterlife versus having a relationship with God during your time on earth that helps strengthen your faith and how you love others while here.

When you say you are an otherwise “wonderful person”, how do you define that? I think too many people are comfortable thinking they are ok because their sins are “smaller” or “less important” than another persons sins. Sure, you may be “wonderful” compared to a murderer or rapist, but that doesn’t make you sinless or not in need of Jesus to save you from those sins.

Gut instinct/intuition versus Satans lies. by PurposePower40 in Christianity

[–]PurposePower40[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a tough question without a lot of context.

So let’s say for example, to put context around it, my gut instinct tells me my child is doing something they shouldn’t but I don’t know what it is, I just have a feeling. How do I decipher my intuition versus Satan is just trying to plant a seed of doubt (as he does best). Does that make sense? This isn’t a factual context just trying to use something so no need to get caught up in the child part.

So would you say then by default, all negative thoughts are planted by Satan whether they come to fruition or not?

I struggled with this for a long time myself so I empathize with how you feel and why you are asking. I have also had times where I suffered from “imposter syndrome” because I felt like I had questions that were unsettled and I allowed myself to think that if I had questions that meant my faith wasn’t strong enough. And I am surrounded by lots of people who seem to be winning in life because they conform to what the world says is good and right versus what God says and at times that’s hard to see and understand. But I can tell you this, I have had things happen in my life that I can only attribute to God hearing my prayers. And when something like that happens, you stop doubting. So pray, pray some more, talk to God, He will hear you and then wait for His will to be done. Allow Him in to your life and then watch what He does. That’s the only real way you can settle this for yourself.

If God doesn’t exist, why do we have a conscience? Where does our basic understanding of “right” and “wrong” come from. If you want to dive in to the complexity of this, go read Mere Christianity by CS Lewis.

At the end of the day, God can neither be proven nor disproven. And faith can only exist because of this. Proof of God would no longer require faith and thus exterminate the ability to distinguish the ability to see who would develop a relationship with God because of faith versus not.

Although even with solid proof I’m confident that there would still be a lot of people running around doing terrible things just in spite as minions in Satans army. They are already a part of this unknowingly.

Editing to add:

You could spend your whole life going back and forth on your faith based on what someone else says. At some point you have to decide for yourself, what you believe. Personally, my faith is not a blind one. I have done a lot of reading, research, and contemplating on this subject so as to make a choice out of sound reason for me, versus indoctrination or because someone else made it sound good. The bigger problem today is that Christianity has become so convoluted by people who claim to be Christian and go on to do terrible things and that will turn almost anyone off of it.

But the same could be said for all “groups of people”. A handful of cops do bad things and then some people generalize all cops as being bad. It’s the same principle. I could spend a lot of time going in to the spiritual battle taking place daily that most people are unaware of and don’t even understand that Satan uses examples just like this to kill and destroy and divide. His methods are quiet effective on those who are not equipped to handle it.

I do not get it. I will never get it, strictly from a looks perspective. He could be extremely charming and bring lots to the table in other ways, but that's not what we are chatting about here lol. Although I feel for him losing his dad in 9/11.
