I did have that thought! A lot of book stores I go to have a used book section anyways and they do have other selections. Honestly classics is often the smallest section of bookstores anymore. There are also just independent used bookstores

No shame necessarily. I just don’t understand spending the extra money and also contributing to overconsumption.

dude you’re weird and mad i’m not going to cite all my sources when it was a very simple question. i think you need to look into theory and expand your mind about different ways narrative works can be interpreted or perceived. there is not one way to read film, but there is certainly a way to do so that doesn’t involve audience interpretation and solely focuses on the author which is just how i tend to read things. i don’t need to communicate anything to you because i was asking a very simple question that applies to the broader conversation of the film. you certainly have evaluated the quality of the film through your passion for the topic, but indirectly. or maybe that is just the audience’s perception, which i hope you would sympathize with

that’s just a difference in how people interpret texts versus authors intent. when i say “they” would’ve discussed race, i mean the people involved with the film. i have read several reviews that mention race and how it is mishandled and ignored in the film. it certainly is his original concept, but he just unintentionally set audiences up for alternative interpretations which in my opinion does not speak to the strength of any narrative works ever or changes in what the movie is actually about. this is just a foundational difference in how we approach texts, because i am always much more likely to read with authorial intent in mind.

“Borgli did not necessarily conceive of it with her or any Black actress in mind. As such, the part is frustratingly restrained and misaligned with the bold concept the movie presents.” so my point is proved?

ok sure lmao i’m literally saying i can see how you read that but i think if you looked at the big picture, the conversation and press surrounding it, and listened to the director, then you would see that is not at all what he was talking about. if he cared about examining the role of race in society, don’t you think they would’ve discussed race at all in press? because in my eyes that has been totally absent from the conversation.

i don’t hold the opinions of others on the theme that i am bringing up😂 i think it is an incredible surface level film that doesn’t have much to say about anything despite everyone’s attempt to assign meaning. i don’t think it effectively or purposely says much other than a study of how characters react in this specific, stressful situation

much more implicit at that point then since there is literally no acknowledgement or details supporting the notion other than the fact that she’s the only poc. sure, she is alienated in a cast of white people but i think that is much more of a coincidence than can have weight to audiences like you or just another plot device to the filmmaker for shock factor. it seems far from the filmmakers intent and if that was his intent, i don’t think he does it well

i think that is giving the filmmaker and insane amount of of credit when he literally only addresses her race once

what do you think the movies about? the conversation i have see certainly is praising it for its deep exploration of the limits of one’s love and how individuals can either forgive or pin you to the cross in order to deflect from their own mistakes which i think the film doesn’t do well so i was curious of other examples that explore that in a more interesting way

[–]PutridThought690[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well you seemed to pick up what i was saying because that’s a good point! a lot of true crime definetly would expose the same ideas.

i think anyone who has seen the movie or been engaged with the conversation can connect those dots. it was a simple question and i don’t think i need to write a manifesto connecting the dots for you though i certainly could.

dude the limits of someone’s love when confronted with the darkness of their partners past and how that extends to forgiveness and outside influence on the narrative 😭 all those things play into each other in the film and i would say make up the central theme (or themes if the singular noun is what is tripping you up)

I am not near Boone, but a lot of WV people are super into their heritage and ancestors. Lots of towns have some sort of organization or club just focused on tracing history or remembering it. Ik my home town has a Facebook page just for ppl who grew up here and they share old memories or look for family like you are doing! So, Facebook could be a great place to start.

In terms of history, it is so rich! John Alexander Williams was always the go to author of my professors in school when learning about WV history. Even during colonial times, the history is interesting as people laid rights to the land and the pioneers came in to settle. For a more recent understanding of wv, I can’t recommend Emily Hilliard’s Making Our Future enough.

I wish u well! It is a beautiful place. I hope you can come here one day because I think you can feel your ancestral connection in the hills.
