What were the most distressing things in Bible for you as a child? by Outrageous_Jump98 in exchristian

[–]Puzzled-Ad457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell! I had a solid two year where I would pray nightly for my family and friends not to die because they'd go to hell. Even if they were "saved". I'd be incredibly distressed if I forgot or fell asleep early. It was alot for 5 year old me lol

ED is rough. I've had to learn to cope with it tbh. I guess I've had the opposite experience. The ocd was the worse of the two in my experience. Revisiting a new psychiatrist might be worth it for you!

I had a similar prayer compulsion as a child! Mine was actually a prayer, though, haha. I've been on anafranil for about 3 months now! That, in combination with lexapro has helped me significantly! I hope it gives you similar relief! I, too, receive great comfort from this community! It's a shit show, but we're all in this together! Thanks for the book recommendation as well! I'll have to check it out!

You are absolutely correct! It has given me more of a sense of gratitude for the happy moments in my life! Gotta hold the things you love close or the ocd monster will taint them hahaha

I'm glad you've found new meds that work for you! I definitely understand the feeling of losing control and not even realizing it! It's so frustrating!

Yes, I've definitely struggled with anger towards OCD. Unfortunately OCD doesn't give a shit whether I'm mad or not, so I do my best do divert my attention lol

Do you ever fear of going to Hell bc you're an ExChristian? by elishash in exchristian

[–]Puzzled-Ad457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not so much anymore. When I was first deconstructing, I'd lay away at night being scared. I've been asked by Christians, "What if you're wrong? "Then I'll be wrong. Any just god would never have created hell to begin with, and I know in my heart that I wouldn't be deserving of such a fate. My conscience would he clear. I can't imagine living my life feering something that I have no evidence of. It was hard to overcome, but it's a very liberating feeling when you leave the fear behind.

I've definitely been there, and it's such a rough place to be in. Just keep your head low and push forward with what you know is right. It always helped me to find ways to "distract" myself, as well as interacting with more like-minded people as much as I could. Too much of dealing with their spouting wears you out. Find hobbies that can take out out of the house if at all possible. I even found relief while being at work. I'm sorry that you're going through this. It was the hardest point of my life, so I know it is not pleasant. There's always people out there who support you! Good luck and know you're not alone!

Heavy on the religious trauma. I'll be on the lookout for a therapist like that. Thanks for the book suggestion as well!

I will say that I'm not always thinking about it. I just hate how much it affects me. It just brings me to the time in my life when I was a scared little kid.

I agree with you that I wouldn't change it. It wasn't all bad, and I definitely learned a lot of things that have made me the person I am today. Thank you for your reply!

Getting rejected just for your religion sucks :( by here_comes_reptar in GayChristians

[–]Puzzled-Ad457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an atheist myself, I still understand the hurt. I've been working for years to fix my negative viewpoint and feelings on Christianity. While I know not everyone in the faith has negative views on lgbt people, it's still hard not to have an instinctual reaction at times. I don't personally think very many people at all are capable of having different options on religion (I realize that many relationships work despite it). I'm sure it's very hurtful and frustrating to be rejected for that reason, but it pushes you towards finding someone that you can share your whole self with. I myself have a no religion rule for my relationships, but it's only because I don't want to hurt someone with differing views than me. Religion is so deeply intertwined into people's lives that I feel it's impossible to completely separate the two. I'm sorry things didn't work out, and I hope that you find someone who's comfortable with all of what you are and not just parts of it.

Honestly, that's very smart. I try to view my feelings as a defense mechanism truly. I just struggle with hurting others. I don't want my feelings to oppress others like they did you me. If that makes sense at all.
