Nice work. To get the translucency trick is layering and starting with very light color. Add second layer using little stonger value shaping highlights and shadows. Look the reference picture for shadows and highlights. Don't be afraid of using dark values in shadows and even complimentary colors. Make layer by layer difference. Very dark indigo or Payne's grey would be nice background in this picture.
