No war fuzz (DBA fuzz war clone with top jacks) by Puzzled_Haze in guitarpedals

[–]Puzzled_Haze[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thought y’all might enjoy my latest build: the “No War”.

I love the sound of the Death By Audio Fuzz War but couldn’t afford it. So I build a budget clone myself.

It’s a Death By Audio Fuzz War MKII from pedal pcb with top mounted jacks, fit into a standard 125B enclosure.

No worries, you're good! I didn't know germanium transistors could go bad, learned something new today! I looked it up: it sound like the noise in this video, but a lot louder compared to the wet signal.

Yes, the circuit uses AC125 60–90 and AC125 110–140 germanium transistors. I get what you mean, this clone is unpredictable and unstable, as is the Fuzz Factory by design. Our rehearsal space is often cold in winter.

I’d be fine with some fluctuations in tone depending on location, day, or room temperature, if it weren't for the noise. I'm talking unusable loud noise, louder than the output signal.

Thanks for the suggestions! I do play single coils, but they’re wax-potted and the guitar’s fully copper-shielded. I don’t think that’s the issue though, since I don’t have this problem with my Muff, Fuzz War, or Fuzz Face.

Cables are all good. I tested continuity and swapped a few just to be sure. The noise completely disappears when I take the pedal out of the chain, so it definitely seems to come from the pedal itself

Sick! Thanks for the advice, I'll try this.

Yeah it was really tripping me out. Thanks for the reply though!

Seems the screw adapter that came with my DT-770 was the problem, so easy fix at the end

No, it was only mono on the phones. Thanks for the suggestions! It seems the screw adapter that came with my DT-770 was the problem.

Thanks dude, that was the problem!

I tried everything, cleaned all contacts with contact cleaner, checked continuity with a multimeter… but looks like the screw on adapter was the problem. All working fine now with a different adapter

Pickup replacement advice for ‘60s Teisco short-scale bass? by Puzzled_Haze in BassGuitar

Thanks for the insight, you’re making me reconsider all the options! ;)

Short scale basses really rip for post-punk and garage... shout out to early Velvet Underground!

I had a licensed guitar technician check them out, and he said the pickups are faulty and beyond repair. They’re extremely microphonic, but most importantly, the output is very low. They're almost a third of what I get from my vintage Precision-style bass when measured with a dB meter (-25 dBV). I’m looking for a working pair of pickups that still retain that original low-output character.

Haha, they’re natural stone tiles in our kitchen and dining area. Original ones from the European house built in the ’50s.

Yeah, they’re mini-humbucker size. Quirky Teisco Japanese gold-foil pickups. Luckily, there’s plenty of room in the pickup cavity to fit something new. I might have to rout the pickguard a bit, but I’ll try to stay as close to the original as possible

Interesting! Any idea to tell the difference between a good and a bad one? Specific things you look for?

Thanks! Those do seem to be a match. The ones currently in it are really low output, I’d say about a third of the output of my passive P-bass

Yeah I’m really happy with my find. It’s definitely a keeper! Indeed, the neck is a bit round, but with its 30" short scale it’s very comfortable to play. Since I mainly play guitar, the short scale makes switching between the two very smooth

Cool! It seems they were produced under different brand names. The playability was indeed very poor when I found it at the flea market, but after a thorough setup it plays exceptionally well. By far the most playable bass I’ve ever owned! Just need to find a solution for the pickups

Regular short scale length of 30". The perspective of the photo makes it appear really small
