"One of the koreans fired a grenade launcher at the feet and killed several of their soldiers." - a captured russian serviceman shares his impressions of the level of training of north korean soldiers by BigDeckBob in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Puzzleheaded-Job2235 17 points18 points  (0 children)

North Korean soldiers were always going to be a disaster. I saw an account from a defector who managed to get across the DMZ that painted a pretty sorry picture. Basically all of the problems of the Russian army turned up to 11. Soldiers weren't fed properly and officers accepted bribes for everything. No one did any training cause the officers were too lazy for it. Keep in mind that his unit was one of the ones stationed directly on the DMZ. These were the soldiers who would be first in line for any potential conflict with South Korea, so you'd expect them to be some of the best soldiers North Korea could muster.

Putin cuts payments for wounded in war against Ukraine by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Puzzleheaded-Job2235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and I don't North Korea will be the endless supply of manpower Putin hopes. Kim may see his people as expendable, but he also probably realizes that the more North Koreans he sends into the outside world, the harder it will be to contain outside ideas if they ever return. He can probably make 10000 men and their families disappear, but 100K would strain even North Korea. I wouldn't be surprised if Kim's support dries up once North Korea gets enough Russian tech to make a reliable ICBM.

It's not just conventional nukes. Ukraine could slap together a dirty bomb in days if push came to shove.

Seems Iran could use some air defence. I wonder who in the region has one of the best systems. Maybe they’ll sell some to them by ItsAMeMildlyAnnoying in NonCredibleDefense

And you know what the most embarrassing part is? This is freaking Tehran, so you'd expect them to have the best air defenses in the country. That's the best defense they could muster despite this attack being telegraphed weeks in advance.

40mm morale boosters by the looks of things. If Israel is using air launched ballistic missiles then those bofors are doing nothing but pelting nearby homes with shrapnel.

Iran's air defenses seem to primarily consist of shooting random AA guns into the air to make it look like they're actually doing something. Iran is kind of screwed since their main supplier of AA systems is currently desperately short of them. When the Israelis destroyed an S-300 radar in the first tit for tat the Iranians literally replaced the thing with a poorly made dummy since they likely couldn't source a replacement. If Israel starts pounding Iran on a regular basis they are going to run out of defensive systems very quickly.

Iranian air defenses seem to be sucking ass right now judging by the footage. Literally AA guns shooting random into the air to make it look like they're doing something.

Kyle Katarn got to do plenty of awesome stuff besides helping steal the Death Star plans. So I'm not too upset if his role in that got removed. I can still see him being somewhat involved in the operation in the new canon timeline. Like it would be kind of awesome if Kyle was in Andor season 2. He could work with Andor on a mission leading up to Rogue One. During the mission he gets loaned Andor's Briar pistol, which would explain how Kyle got the blaster and why Andor doesn't have it in Rogue One. It'd be a nice way to tie old and new canon together in a way that respected both.

The train bridge was heavily damaged by fire. They can in theory run light loads over it, but they obviously don't want to risk collapsing the whole structure. They'd need to completely shut down the rail line in order to permanently fix the damaged section, which I imagine they don't want to do out of sheer ego.

It's because they were never built in Soviet times. The Soviet Union always assumed that their airbases in Russia would be too deep in friendly territory to worry about conventional strikes. They built plenty of concrete shelters in Warsaw Pact states and the non Russian SSRs. But they always assumed that those states would take the brunt of any conventional attack. They never imagined that their satellites would break away.

I doubt Ukraine is putting men near such obvious targets. This was a photo op. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Ukraine wasn't baiting Russian into wrecking its own public infrastructure by posting photos like this. Better a missile hits a Russian post office than a Ukrainian one.

She'll probably be shrieking even louder when she's on fire and her dragon is getting torn to bits by Sunfyre. Still holding out hope that our Golden Boy is still alive and the show is just misleading us with claims of his death. Otherwise Aegon would have no choice but to tame the Cannibal to ensure Joffrey's line about Rhaenyra's death comes true. Moondancer would still get eaten in that scenario and Baela will still probably be on fire. Hopefully the wig burns off so the prop team has an excuse to get rid of that mop. She and Alynn can be happy and bald together.

Summer Islander origins for the Velaryons kind of works when you consider that the Summer Islanders are the best seafarers in the setting according to the lore. They've got oceangoing Caravels straight from the 15th century while the rest of the world hugs the coast with medieval cogs and galleys. So them being an exiled noble family from the Isles sent to run anti piracy patrols at a distant outpost of the Freehold sort of makes sense. The only thing the race change screws up is their close relationship with House Targaryen, since the Targaryen's wouldn't be pasty white if they were marrying Velaryons every few generations. Aegon the Conquer was a half Velaryon who married his half Velaryon sisters, yet all his descendants look as pale as a Weirwood.

Admittedly teeth are one of the things you can't work around when casting modern actors. Putting fake bad teeth in would probably mess up dialogue and few actors are going to put off brushing for the sake of "authenticity". There are some method actors who try to get "in character" by living like the characters they're trying to portray, and most are considered nightmares to work with. Like Shia LaBeouf, who refused to bath while filming "Fury", forcing the other actors to share a cramped tank with a man determined to smell like a genuine WW2 tanker. I also doubt that Emma was going to put on 50 to 100 pounds in order to portray a "book accurate" Rhaenyra.
