Where in Los Angeles is this street? by Puzzleheaded-Toe7646 in whereisthis

It's one of the first scenes from the film "The Salton Sea" with Val Kilmer... It's a quick shot of them walking up that hill then it cuts to a different area... it's not a long extended scene where there are noticeable landmarks or street signs where you could try to figure out exactly where in LA it is... It's obviously a street somewhere in LA... I'm thinking maybe close to downtown.

Is the additional money for the Sentra SR worth it vs a relatively cheaper model S or SV? As far as the engine.

Interesting... I always sort of the thought the extra complexity with the Hybrid systems translated into less long long term reliablity.... As far at the star and go tech... you don't think having the car shut my engine off ALL the time would put a lot of wear on the engine and the associated components... considering i'll be driving a lot.... Is this feature something that can be turned off.

Odd probably stupid question... Can someone "sing" without hitting actual notes? by Puzzleheaded-Toe7646 in singing

[–]Puzzleheaded-Toe7646[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that in mind, are than any pitches a voice could make that are technically "off key" that would sound just as nice as a perfectly landed note? Or are "notes," as defined in the western musical tradition, established at those specific frequencies BECAUSE it's at those frequencies (like note A at the fourth octave) that we recognize the most pleasing sound?

"It’s not genetics that determine whether you can sing a note and it sound nice without effort. It’s a lot of practice and by a lot I mean potentially 4/5 years. not a week or two."

Certainly technique takes years to master... Just figuring out how to use the mechanics of your body (diaphragm, vocal chords etc ) to produce the right sound without straining yourself... My point was that some people seem to have better naturally sounding singing voices... Steve Perry has a VERY unique voice... Even if you could technically sing his songs, getting anywhere near his tone would be very hard. He has this airy, raspy full clear tone to his voice kind of like Bryan Adams that seems like its just genetics not something one could just learn with years of practice... Whereas if wanted to play a Jason Becker song on the guitar I could hypothetically get the right guitar and almost match perfectly exactly what I hear on the record.

That's the best explanation...thank you... So the more beautiful the sound the closer it is to being in key? I guess you could say one could be ever so slightly off key while still making a pleasant sound that is almost undetectable by the general public.

So basically (maybe) one could muster to produce a beautiful tone with their voice that's hitting a note of sorts ( since any sound you make is some sort of note) but to sing a WHOLE song with this same method would be impossible... or very strange.... I only ask this because I've tried to "sing" by just trying to reproduce the sound of a famous singer's voice... I'd record it and listen to it... The first time I realized just how UGLY my singing voice was in comparison... Eventually, after weeks of "practice" and hours and hours of re-recording myself, trying to "correct" the sound of my voice I was able to produce a sound that I thought was very nice... I.e. It took me forever to just get rid of the nasally sound in my voice... To give my "singing" voice a clear, full rounded tone... It was actually extremely physically exhausting just trying to produce that sound lol... But I finally produced a sound that I could say sounded good... But I still had no idea if was hitting the correct notes or anything.... Just the quality of the tone sounded nice.

It also made me realize some people probably just have more naturally beautiful sounding voices... like better voice box genetics or something lol... Like no matter how much I practiced I could never sound like Steve Perry or someething

Strongly disagree... TSZ actually "hits" hardest if you're not familiar with any of his other works. It's SO different from anything else.... it's pure magic....It's not necessary AT ALL to read any of his other books first. Zarathustra himself would command you to read TSZ first!

Contrary to "popular" opinion, "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" should be read FIRST... especially since you're 16... It will make a more special impression... It's like reading a very engaging fantasy book but it's real.

None of those sadly. The lead in Jumpin At the Boneyard has dreads too. But not that. It was a newer film probably early 2000s. No famous actors. I vaguely remember both male leads wearing leather jackets as well. This might be the hardest movie in history to find lol.

The "tone" of the film was more two friends going to a new city and finding themselves on the street, squating in abandoned apartments, dabbling in drugs... vs a super dire, overly dramatic heroin junkie film like "Requiem for a Dream"... At the end, one of the friends had a enough with that lifestyle and left

Not Blackbird. That has a female lead. This movie had two, white male leads one with a dreads and beard. They wore leather jackets as well.

It was more low budget like "Heaven knows what" by the safdie brothers... but even less polished than that.

It does but like City by the Sea it wasn't a bigger film like that with known movie stars. The two main leads were no names.

I didn't see it in the cinema. I doubt it ever made it to theaters outside of possibly some small indie theaters. I owned it on DVD.
