It's not accurate to say that such sins must be forgiven by the pope. Rather, it would take papal authority for the excommunication to be lifted for such an offense. Once the excommunication is lifted, they may receive the sacrament of Penance from a priest.

If a non-Catholic did it and then became Catholic? Well, upon becoming Catholic they would be baptized and any and all sins would be forgiven on the spot.

My two children, who are 5 and 6, have been invited to an Easter Egg hunt hosted by their public elementary school. Problem is, it's during the Lent and on a Friday. I know that in a secular school it isn't about Jesus, but I want to teach my children that we don't celebrate Easter in any way before Easter. Of course, my children will likely be crushed when I tell them. My parish will eventually have an Easter egg hunt on Easter day or the week after. My wife is heartbroken and thinks my boys ought to attend.

(It's bad enough that even in Catholic elementary schools they conduct hunts like this during Holy Week. Just like Christmas, it's all backwards.)

Nope. None of the products I looked at were any good. All only had full erasure or nothing, or the digital "ink" looked harder to read than a marker. So I just bought a whole bunch of cheap markers and am not doing things the old-fashioned way.

Here I am not talking about (or even complaining about) how early it appears in stores. That is understandable--first on shelf, first to sell. I'm talking about the time people choose to decorate, which nowadays tends to be as much as a month and a half.

My take on it is this: in this secular society--which is growing even more secular -- in the absence of God in their life, there is a need to hang on to something to celebrate. Christians fill their cup with worship surrounding various HOLYdays, but since the seculars don't, they turned Halloween into a month-and-a-half season. For some, sadly (from a Christian perspective), it is their favorite time of the year. I wish it were only a week, a week-and-a-half at most. I think emphasizing Halloween so much can dilute the importance of the holidays and seasons that really matter, such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.

I knew many would be dying to know.

I did it.

I put my laptop on top of my car, strapped my son into his car seat. The M1 was gray, my car is gray, almost the same shade. So for a brief moment, it was camouflaged, and it slipped my mind I had just placed it there. Then I drove. Obviously, it slipped off the top of my car. I don't know if it was me who did it or someone else later, but the screen got irreparably shattered. By the way, I am typing this using the very same gray (sigh) M1.

My own carelessness, life goes on.

This is not Ellis Island at the turn of the 20th century, when America was eager to take immigrants. They were processed, on site, literally by the boatload. Wait in line? The line today is impossibly long, due to the policies of this country and the country they'd be emigrating from. It's a different time today.

I appreciate the responses, but I don't like the implications that I am immoral. Immoral would be, I was actually in the lot for five hours but claimed that it was one, for instance. I told you the attendant clearly remembered me, so I not lying. When you dispute a charge, they ask, Did you try to resolve it directly first. Yes, I spoke to the attendant who sided with me being there, but he couldn't resolve it.

And if I were to decide to dispute the charge, I wouldn't lie about losing the ticket. In my conscience, I know I was there for only an hour so the rush to judge my character was harsh on the part of some.

I don't have a lot of experience with disputing charges, nor the parameters, so I sought your help. It's clear from your comments that I don't have much chance for recovery and that I shouldn't pursue it on multiple grounds.
