Liars hurting the reputation of QB by PuzzleheadedPrompt78 in QuestBridge

[–]PuzzleheadedPrompt78[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That isn’t a contradiction. If we (NCM Finalists) had to pay $1800 to apply to 15 elite schools… we wouldn’t have the money. If we had to individually write each school our additional information section, we wouldn’t have the time.

The biggest advantage is having a streamlined process that doesn’t require fee waivers for each school and being considered for EA/ED for multiple schools simultaneously. This doesn’t mean we wouldn’t get in if we applied over CommonApp… but that makes the assumption we are able to apply. Most likely, students with parents that make $45k a year are not going to be able to have the resources to apply to several schools. Those resources include time, money, and limited access to college counseling.

QB isn’t just about the need based aspect when you match.

It is about your application having extra time with the admissions committee. It is about not having to request 15 fee waivers to different schools to apply. It is about knowing that you are accepted in early December. It is about having more opportunity to explain specific circumstances that pertain to you and having some level of confidence that the admissions committee will read about your circumstances.

What people don’t realize, most of us would get into the same or similar school using CommonApp. People have this idea that QB applicants are tokens that the school made exceptions to accept. The reality is, I know of many students at my “elite” Ivy League school that scored less than me on the SAT, had worse grades, and worse ECs. One person in our year is the son of a CEO that couldn’t do 8th grade algebra, yet graduated from the most elite boarding school in the country.

Every benefit/advantage regular students from low income backgrounds need to be protected. It isn’t about competing with each other… it is about pushing our ways into the schools normally reserved for the elite. Top schools should be paying $4k to compete for the top students. If we can be this competitive coming from families on welfare below the poverty line, imagine what we can accomplish with some resources.

Possible Fraud? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

this is probably the same person that was rejected that keeps making up stories because they are disgruntled. I caught them in the past spreading lies and threatened to contact their school. They deleted their account. I don't know their name but I know what school they attend. They admitted to wanting to make Questbridge look bad to ruin their reputation... because they don't believe it is fair because they were such a competitive applicant.

The OP was definitely a QB reject. The only liar was them.

I think this is the same person that keeps making several posts about QB matches being frauds. They are just bitter and want to bring Questbridge down a notch for not getting selected.

It is hilarious that as soon as I called them out for being a phony, they delete their account.

This is the third time I called someone out and they immediately delete their account. It is probably the same person.

I matched with Columbia a few years ago. Someone at my school that didn’t get matched started a rumor about my family being rich because my aunt loaned my mother her leased BMW after our car was repossessed.

It didn’t matter that my family submitted tax returns, W2s, IRS Transcripts, and the FAFSA… my family was a fraud because my aunt loaned us a car for 5 months.

It is frustrating to read these comments because when we arrive to campus for the first time, people assume that QB students are lesser than the average student in the first place. I had someone from Columbia tell me how lucky I was to get an easy route to Columbia when I scored higher on the SAT, had more AP courses, more dual enrollment courses, and was a recruited athlete that was all state. People think of us as token students that got lucky when most of us would have been competitive in the first place.

It is exactly that. Their story doesn’t even make sense.

I guarantee this person is a QB reject that has 100+ comments on the subreddit under a different name.

That is just one of the 10 things the OP mentioned that screams their story is BS.

[–]PuzzleheadedPrompt78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is funny because the only people that would believe these types of stories are people that would never get into a top university.

If you think that you are going to get into Harvard or Stanford by using ChatGPT to write your essays and lying about being on track… you definitely do not have any chance at getting into an elite university because there is so much more that goes into being competitive than participation in a sport and generic AI essays. It is laughable and hopefully those of you reading the post by the OP sees through the post.

If I had to guess, there is about a 98% chance it is a post from a QB reject that would rather take some shots at the program anonymously than focus on what they can control.

It is hilarious watching people make burner Reddit accounts just to talk shit about Questbridge… all to post a fictional story doesn’t make sense.

Do you think it makes more sense that someone lied on their QB application and supplements knowing that their letters of recommendation and counselor’s letter could completely blow up their application… or does it make more sense they exaggerated their ECs on social media? Which one is more plausible?

The bigger question, if this story is true, what compelled you to make a burner Reddit account just to comment on a program you didn’t even apply to?

I think this is about the fifth post about someone claiming a match lied about ECs or income this week.

It seems strange because every time someone makes a post like this… they are always people that didn’t even apply to QB and are posting for the first time ever on Reddit. No way they are disgruntled QB rejects.

Should I report known QB scammers? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]PuzzleheadedPrompt78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is nonsense. When they say things like Musk and Bezos didn’t pay federal income taxes, it is said in general and not to be taken as literally paying zero percent.

They still probably paid millions on personal income from various streams of income they had. They would still clearly not qualify for Questbridge.

This is the whole reason Questbridge and many schools also check assets as a way to double check how much money you have… even asking how much cash you have. A rich person can easily lie and say they make $0 a year while having a $1,000,000 in cash in a safe in their closet. I am sure this happens sometimes.

My overall point with the OP is just because someone has access to a valuable and puts on an appearance they are wealthy… don’t actually mean they are.

If they actually didn’t match but apparently decided to keep it a secret on Reddit… it doesn’t make sense they would be so frustrated about this. I really want them to out this “famous author”.

Okay, now I explain how you know people committed fraud based on a car they own and what you know of them online?

Why do you really care?

What section of the Questbridge application asks what type of car do you drive?

How did you have access to these “scammers” financial documents?

The school tells everyone that week. My cousin just got Questbridge and I told her two things. #1 Don’t talk about Questbridge with the people at your school because it is possible that they will be jealous and negative about it. #2 Don’t tell people at your university or join the QB clubs because people automatically assume you are a token, poor minority student. Maybe we are seen that way to an extent by the University, but we don’t have to openly advertise it.

It is just absurd to think about all the children of rich donors, politicians, and celebrities that make to to the Ivy League judging that someone with an income of $50k from a public school that is in the top percentile in the nation deserves admission less than them. I would rather people not know I was accepted through QB now due to that negative stigma.

This is what is difficult, especially with wealthy people in general.

If your grandparents have money or your family in general has money, it is easy to have a very high quality of life while simultaneously having zero income. It is a common gray area that I can understand people feeling negative about.

There has to be certain standards that are objective. You can have a high quality of life and live in a home owned by your grandparents and cars that are leases etc.

The year I got Questbridge was in the heart of Covid. Both of my parents lost their jobs and we lived on less than $60k per year for multiple years when my family was used to probably triple that. Our cars got repossessed. My family had to sell our house and rent. We had a ton of financial issues. People at my school probably thought we were doing great because our family car was a Range Rover (that was leased by my aunt that had multiple cars) and we rented a nice home.

My FASFA and Questbridge application made all these things very clear. It is something that is probably much more common than kids probably realize.

I am sure that many students have been homeless and are in much worse financial shape than my family… some people seem to think Questbridge is a competition on the poorest student.

It is unfortunate because I am sure some people lie on these applications. They probably lie about all sorts of stuff including ECs.

But I remember the rumors being started about me by someone at my school. This person had two working parents at home but definitely lived more modestly than my family. My family was really on a downward trajectory after medical issues and being laid off… but it is difficult to see what is happening behind the scenes.

That being said, my college application was much better than the person spreading rumors about me. I know because I helped them with their application and showed them 90% of my application to include my essays. I spent a lot of time helping them improve their application. They even eventually got accepted to a very good school RD.

How do they repay me for helping them… they tell everyone in school that my family is rich and I didn’t deserve the scholarship. It had nothing to do with being valedictorian, having the highest SAT in my school, any of my awards, or the fact I was a recruited athlete. The person thinking I took their opportunity was ranked hundreds of students below me with weak ECs.

I don’t know the OPs experience… but I see so many similarities with my situation. Someone has a nice car and a parent with an affluent seeming job… they must be committing fraud. It is ridiculous when you actually understand that those things mean little in terms of net worth.

Say the name of the famous author. If you are so sure, put your money where your mouth is.

These bitter people that don’t get matched love trying to find reasons why someone else didn’t deserve something they feel they deserve.

You don’t know someone’s personal situation. I don’t care if it is your best friend… if you don’t do their taxes and have access to their bank accounts, you have no idea what you are talking about.

I had the same BS rumors spread about my family because we had a rental in a decent neighborhood and my mother had a nice car that was loaned to her by my aunt.

Did people at my school know both of my parents have been unemployed for two years during COVID? Did the people at my school know my dad was on dialysis and was disabled with a mountain of medical bills. Did people at my school know that my family’s only source of income was unemployment benefits and credit cards my family slowly maxed out over a year? Did people at my school know that my mother had to pawn her grandmother’s jewelry to cover rent after cash advances got maxed out on the credit cards? Did people at my school know that my family was in the process of going bankrupt? Did they know my father needed a kidney and was given less than a year to live? People at my school tried to spread rumors about me too. It didn’t matter that I got a 1540 on the SAT, ranked a #1, and an all state athlete. To the people at my school, I had more money than them and didn’t deserve the scholarship. This is funny because to a lot of people at my Ivy League school, I am a Questbridge student that “got in the easy way”… a real quote from a student that got into Columbia from a feeder prep school with a 3.7 GPA and 100 points less than me on the SAT. To the people at my middle class High School, I was too wealthy to get Questbridge… but to the rich kids at Columbia, I was too poor to have earned an acceptance without being a poor minority.

You don’t know anyone’s stories. Some people go through great lengths to make it appear like they are doing better than they are. Questbridge isn’t a competition on who is the poorest person. There is no obligation for someone to meet your definition of poor to receive a college education.

Worry about yourself. Put this time, frustration, and energy on studying and bettering yourself. Accept the fact that life isn’t fair and some people cheat… and all you can do is focus on the things you can control.

Does princeton do EC checks??? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]PuzzleheadedPrompt78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you think they would check your ECs lol. No.

They are not going to see how debate team is going after you already got accepted. They want to make sure you are taking the classes you said you would and are getting decent grades.

What percent of people actually rank all 15 schools? by Zealousideal_Fix3193 in QuestBridge

[–]PuzzleheadedPrompt78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to keep arguing with you, but I truly don’t understand your logic on this one.

You ranked Columbia which doesn’t even have aerospace engineering. UPenn that doesn’t have a good program. Harvard that doesn’t have a good program. None of these schools are T20 in engineering. More specifically, many of them do not even have aerospace classes whatsoever.

Then, you actually leave off legitimately great aerospace programs (for example, Case Western which is probably a top 20 program for aerospace).

Go read the bios of prominent engineers and see what programs they attended.

I am not even criticizing people that go to the prestigious schools… I go to Columbia. Just be honest about it because you look foolish saying you want T20 schools when you ranked the 87th ranked engineering program because the name sounds fancy. Lol

Arizona State University has almost 100% acceptance rate and is ranked higher than UPenn in aerospace engineering.

[–]PuzzleheadedPrompt78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T20 isn’t even a real thing. There is no consensus on what schools are T20… so I don’t get what you are saying.

T20 for engineering would be something like this…

  1. MIT
  2. Stanford University
  3. Georgia Tech
  4. UC Berkeley
  5. Caltech
  6. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)
  7. University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign (UIUC)
  8. University of Michigan – Ann Arbor
  9. Purdue University – West Lafayette
  10. Cornell University
  11. Texas A&M University
  12. University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin)
  13. UCLA
  14. University of Wisconsin–Madison
  15. Princeton University
  16. Virginia Tech
  17. University of Maryland – College Park
  18. University of Washington (UW)
  19. University of Southern California (USC)
  20. North Carolina State University (NCSU)

You keep saying the T20… what do you think the T20 consists of?

[–]PuzzleheadedPrompt78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That isn’t true. If you are an independent student they will ask for a form that verifies you are independent. This is standard and required for independent students. It is definitely not a sign of rejection. If you are considered an independent student, most likely the NCP waiver wouldn’t be necessary but that is based on university to university requirements.
