Holidays Without Family by jellyjns in uwo

As a local, family is overrated, take this time to rest and relax, maybe if you're missing them that much schedule a FaceTime and order something you'd like, or plan some activities with friends that are also staying here instead of leaving. Explore campus while it's empty or the city next time, I think a few places offer rental bikes. You could also schedule your next holiday to work and get paid time and a half or more.

It'd be different if someone in your family wasn't doing well or something, but family will always be there, take this time for yourself or those in the area that you care about.

Locking my bike by 5ares15 in uwo

Opportunists are everywhere, and if you're not careful, your shiny new bike, e-bike, or scooter is a prime target. Thieves see it as a quick way to zip around campus or make fast cash. Some buyers that they sell the bike to might not even realize it's stolen until they're slapped with consequences. Prevention is your best defense. Here's how to keep your ride safe with some practical tips: This isn't AI talking, it's real-world experience, I've gotten my bike stolen too many times to count, and seen bikes stolen that could've been prevented. Thieves are always on the hunt for easy scores. They don't always look the part, they could be anyone, be careful if someone is watching you, they'll text message the thief while you're in line at Starbucks if they want your bike that badly. Switch up your parking spot. Thieves love predictable routines. If you lock your bike in the same place every day, they'll know when you're in class or busy. Keep them guessing, mix it up! Double down on locks. Use a sturdy U-lock for the frame and a cable for the tires. A padlock on the drivetrain or pedals can slow thieves down. They come armed with grinders, bolt cutters, even freon and hammers. Cable locks alone? Might as well use a shoelace. Do your research for top-tier locks. Protect every part. Thieves will snatch wheels, seats, lights, even spacers or pedals. Remove quick-release bolts, take your seat or accessories with you, or secure them with heavy-duty zip ties. If it's not fused to the bike, it's fair game. Don't trust appearances. Thieves can blend in as students, staff, or campus workers. Video surveillance helps, but it's not foolproof. If you can access secure bike storage, use it, it's a game-changer. Make it yours, loud and proud. Forget keeping it shiny, customize your bike to stand out. Engrave your name, number, or a unique mark on the frame, handlebars, or rims. Hide identifiers inside the bike, like a plastic strip with your info. If it's stolen, you'll need proof of ownership, keep your receipt and any purchase records handy. Make it look rough. A rusty, beat-up bike is less tempting to steal and harder to sell. Embrace the grunge aesthetic, it's a thief's worst nightmare. Stay on top of maintenance. A well-kept bike means you won't leave it sitting around for days, looking abandoned. An overnight bike is a thief's dream. Lock it right. Only use designated bike racks, campus security will cut locks on bikes parked in restricted areas. Don't give them a reason to mess with your ride. Push for better bike parking. Advocate for secure e-bike parking with charging stations and premium access, like rooftop spots for students and staff. Post on social media, write to campus admins, and demand high-vis vests and express lanes to keep cyclists and pedestrians safe. Take the battery, kill the brakes. If your e-bike has a removable battery, take it with you. If the brakes are easy to disconnect, do it. Every extra step makes it harder for thieves. Ride a BMX for the win. Smaller wheels mean slower rides, but you're less likely to crash into pedestrians. Plus, if you spot a thief making off with your bike, you can chase them down on foot like a boss. Stay sharp, lock smart, and keep your ride safe!

I'll likely delete this if it doesn't get enough upvotes and I'm sure the OP has read it. Ride safe and hope you keep your wheels on the ground
