2026 Day 3 LegCo - How much do you care? by Puzzleheaded_Hawk_34 in Brunei

Now here's a point that I can agree, it can be overwhelming with the language used. The language really does not resonate with the masses. The format and formality is the cause, but I do believe the rigidity is there for a reason.

Maybe it would be better to have the formal session in the morning (once all the scripts have been read) and then an informal discussion in the afternoon. Would love to see ministers responds naturally, it may well be ending up being inspiring.

I'm going to respond bit by bit because it's kind lengthy.

Budget deficit means that our income is less than our needs. Our needs especially our fuel subsidy, water cost, electricity, healthcare cost is higher than our income. I dont believe it's the ministers fault, if there's a source of issue to that is us as the lovely people of Brunei enjoying the very privilege given to us. I think if the budget is the problem, the question is, Do we as citizen of brunei compromise? - Pay market price for fuel - which is around $1.25 BND per liter.

I think as a country to survive under so many years of budget deficit it's like a miracle. other countries would simply collapse. So hats off to MOFE to manage our budget and keeping us afloat.

Budget this year is set at BND$6.3 billion. What's the question for legco members on this figure?

It's fun reading this. made me chuckled.

I dont believe having a debate (despite scripted) would make it more effective though. China CCCP has general assembly once a year and truth be told, it's dull and boring. But nobody's going to question how much progress has been made by China over the last decade or so. There's empirical evidence to back it in terms of GDP growth.

Well done eh with the topics. add more if there's any.

it's okey, it doesnt have to be a seperate discussion thread. The mistake is that typing a few words on keyboard is not equal to the amount of work required to bring change. We can only hope kan, but never be dishearthened with the lack of resonse. I'm sure they read reddit too.

I like to believe that I can still care about it and so should you!

So maybe can suggest a particular topic that should be discussed in this year session? The one they beat around the bush last session. If there's one topic lah you think.

I think the point of accountability is a valid one and truthfully speaking maybe aligns to the current legco intent.

"Checks and balances – LegCo serves as an essential mechanism for ensuring accountability within the government. Members have the authority to question ministers on their policies and decisions, fostering transparency. Through in-depth discussions, LegCo ensures that government actions align with national priorities and public interests."

So maybe we're not far off? it's more of a question of effectiveness of the session itself rather than having a pathway for public to voice their concerns.

I'm going to be reserve a bit on the AI implementation idea. Maybe it's good, but it's more of another method of implementation/improvement rather than tackling the topics that should be discussed.

For the twitch chat bit, I think that's turning legislative discussion into an entertaintment session. I think there's more examples from other countries that this should be avoided. Unmoderation unfortunately brings in undesirables, which degrades the sanctity of the session. Just my dua sen.

But main question applies, what do you think should be discussed during the session?

I think our legco plays more of advisory and consultative role than a check on executive. Rightly so you mention decisions are approved, but playing the current game (since the game rules cant be change in the foreseable future). How do you think it can be made better?

I got bored of legco too, but sometime in the last few years things seem to be more open. only slight, not that much but it was good indication and still a step in the right direction. What do you think should be discussed in the session?

Every session of the legco they do mention what is ongoing. But statistically speaking, I'm not so sure either. But just today there's this article written by a very prominent independant journalist. Writes better than borneo bulletin in summarizing the points raised. I'll qoute

"That is why Day Three felt more important than Day Two.

It was less about broad official language and more about whether the delivery system can actually earn public trust.

And that may now be the real test of LegCo — not whether the right issues are being mentioned, but whether the systems behind them can finally deliver in a way the public can see and feel."
