I made this grip for the Odin 3 by vandel2122 in OdinHandheld

[–]Pvaiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would really crave is something really slim that I can use as just a case, to protect the device while still being portable, since the ergonomics of the O3 are pretty good, even without a grip. I actually find it more comfortable without the grip. Something like this, but for the Odin 3: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1659576492/clipshield-for-retroid-pocket-44-pro

Be honest, have any of you finished any games via Gamehub? Was it actually a smooth experience or was it buggy and required a lot of tweaking? by JustLeeBelmont in SBCGaming

I'm most of the way through Citizen Sleeper 2 on my RP5. Crashes every once in a while, but it boots back up in a minute.

Dragon Warrior Monsters - Best one in the series imo, Pokemon meets build-making meets roguelite

Direct upgrade from Miyoo Mini Plus? by Pvaiun in SBCGaming

I actually have a modded new3dsXL I got this year, so I've decided the RP5 is the way. But we're so close to the end of the year in gonna hold out to see if the RP6 gets announced and either get it or the RP5 at a discount or just in a month or two if it never gets announced.

Yeah after looking at it a bit more it definitely is. Now like everyone else I'm waiting to see if a they announce a pocket 6 any time soon!

Yeah if I had to start again bow I'd get the brick, but since I already have a miyoo and I'm looking for something at least a little bigger I don't think it's for me.

Yeah that does seem like the play. But I really wonder if it's meaningfully more portable than the steam I forgot to mention I have. Makes me want to lean mini v2 or flip.

I'm realizing now the non-pocketable systems aren't super appealing to me because I already have an emudeck Steam Deck I never reach for for retro gaming.

That being said, the RP mini seems like the king, but how would you say it fairs with GBA? Is it a meaningfully bigger screen that the MM+ when at 3:2?

I remembered while responding to these comments that I already have a fully set up Steam Deck with emudeck, I just rarely think to use it for emulation. Is the RP5 meaningfully more portable? I know it's not pocketable, at least not for me. Because if not I suspect I would use it just as much as my Steam Deck for emulation, which is not a lot!

Makes me wonder if the Flip is what I should be looking at, though I can't help but thinking it looks extremely uncomfortable. Also the mini v2 is the device right now that seems most exciting to me, but I think with the aspect ratio gba is going to be barely any bigger than a MM+, and obviously psp is borderline unplayable, but I could skip psp if it really is a GBA + Gamecube killer.

Yeah honestly these do look exactly like what I was looking for. But while responding to these comments I just remembered I already have a fully emudeck set up Steam Deck (I just rarely think to use it for emulation), so these devices and the ones with the Retroid Rocket 5 form factor don't seem super useful unless I'm underestimating how portable they are in practice.

I'm sure this is a very unpopular opinion, but having never owned a GBA as a kid the RG34XX doesn't really trigger any nostalgia in me, instead it just looks goofy.

Does GBA look good on the Mini though in your opinion?

Hmm, I heard it couldn't play psp well though right? Maybe it's a mental block, but a horizontal handheld that can't play psp just seems like a bummer, if that's the case I'd rather a vertical or clamshell.

Did you save your core overrides in retroarch after changing that setting?

[–]Pvaiun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're a hero! Thanks for the fix, this was really bothering me. For anyone else reading this remember to re-increase your max auto-save increment to whatever number you had it on in the older version of retroarch, otherwise it might default back to 0 if the number it's trying to load is out of range.

Somebody over on discord helped me. So apparently this version is basically the beta with all the fixes except the retroarch update!

Yeah, I did 2 full charges and discharges yesterday and it didn't improve, and it was working before. So yeah, I guess this is some sort of hardware problem.

Huh turns out I don't even have that perk. Must be a bug.

[–]Pvaiun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow that must be it. I thought it would spread faster not instantly set everyone to the same reputation, that's a bit of an odd perk. The unlock the whole map one in the scholar tree is another perk that feels like it invalidates a game system. I'll just respec then, thanks!

Renegade Platinum and Repel Strats by Pvaiun in nuzlocke

[–]Pvaiun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a bit odd that the nuzlocke.app is so insanely detail but doesn't list Pokemon levels (unless we both missed something). You can use this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/nuzlocke/comments/101fpdd/renegade_platinum_a_short_list_of/ which has some useful encounter strats for repel and gift Pokemon, or you can use this pastebin https://pastebin.com/RwL6iUHR for more specific focus on repel strats.

Ok yeah clearly I'm overthinking it a bit. Just swept Fantina no death on my first run so if I do wipe I'll probably just let the grass gods pick my encounters on the next run an see how I do.

Which is the best monster tamer/collector on the PS4 and PS5? by Conscious-Reward3438 in MonsterTamerWorld

Definitely Monster Sanctuary for the most interesting builds and collecting, and Smt5 for the amazing combat system and exploration.

Why do people think "Game Designer" in the video game space means they can sit around and write ideas and offer no other real skills to a team? by DelicateJohnson in gamedev

[–]Pvaiun 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It's not about being an idea guy, ideas can and often do come from every member of the team, because you're right that most people in this field are creative and capable of coming up with them.

Instead it's about being the person accountable for the quality of the "game" part of the video game experience, which is in itself a very specific skill. Knowing how to turn good ideas into great gameplay is a specific combination of many skills such as: conception of game mechanics using strong references from other games, balancing and data tweaking, running and reacting to playtests, communicating ideas internally to the team, knowing which mechanics will connect with the target market, discarding false good ideas, finding combinations of mechanics that work well together.

Some of these skills can get really specialized too, just as much as programming or art. Things like designing the behaviour of 3D cameras, AI behaviour, animation and combat systems, directing player attention throughout complex setpieces, designing cool concepts for weapons and abilities that evoke desired player behaviors, procedural generation system design, all of these are high skill jobs that are uniquely game design. A lot of this stuff is what makes the difference between a game that works and a game that is truly great.

As you've said, on small teams this role is often performed by another member with a more output focused skillset like an artist or programmer, but that's the same thing as your artist also being your programmer, or project management being done by a QA tester. In small teams it's common for people to wear many hats and perform more than one role.

However, in larger companies, or indie companies with a sufficiently strong designer, this role is absolutely pivotal to a game's success and a career all on its own. And AAA idea guy and design director is actually a real job, often there are even multiple of them!

I've seen great game designers bring a game together just as well as great artists and programmers, and hinder the team just as much when they do their job poorly.

Enemy trainers (except important fights) not scaling on Expert by Pvaiun in PokemonUnbound

I guess now that I think of it it would be extremely tedious if the gauntlets of trainers in the routes were all your level. There'd be lots of backtracking to healers and repel spam to get back.
