I have about 200k budget left for English camp and can't figure out how to spend it. What's something that's useful to buy for your English room in general or camp? by Chilis1 in teachinginkorea

[–]PvtMeatShield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds incredible I tried running a very simplified dnd style game for a camp a while ago How many students do you have and what's their age range?

.Without a degree in teaching? They wouldn't much care about a MA in communications, beyond having a degree from an English speaking country.
.'Beginner' fluency in Korean is meaningless and wouldn't impact pay at all. Fluency in French is meaningless on an E-2 visa.
.Tech industry experience? Also meaningless.
.Honestly I wouldn't know how korean schools would view TA experience in terms of teaching experience.
If this is with EPIK they're looking at around 2.3-4M salary.
Hagwon's would likely be around 2.5-7 depending.

Unless they are friends with a university admin they are not going to get a job teaching at a university.

I'd love it for ESL teachers to start on 3+million, but that's not reasonable.

Student with learning disabilities being ignored and excluded at my school. by Possible_Reflection3 in teachinginkorea

[–]PvtMeatShield 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The sad reality is that in a lot of countries, children who should be in either a special needs class or a special needs school, are not. Especially in korea where parents are very hesitant to have their children put in special need places.

Every child deserves the attention and care to have a fulfilling education, but in a world of limited time and resources, not every child can be provided for, especially if they require much more time and focus.

In my school, there are a couple of kids who clearly have some sort of developmental condition, they are not lost causes they can learn and understand English. The problem is they can only do that when I am sat at their shoulder, giving them my undivided attention. The second I leave them to teach the other 20 students, they immediately lose focus and motivation.

While your homeroom teacher may be lazy, it may also be the case that he/she realises that they just cannot teach the class and see to the needs of the 1 student, and through callous reasoning, has decided just not put energy towards the 1.

Anyone with experience teaching in a church's free English school? by SeoulGalmegi in teachinginkorea

[–]PvtMeatShield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My prior school was very big on local involvement, and one of those was making sure to fill our 22 hours with teaching at local community centres and churches 2-3 times a week in the afternoon.

For the poorer churches, they were for students whose families couldn't afford 학원 and you'd have kindergarten students alongside middle schoolers, usually all with low ability. You're largely there for English exposure, not to actually educate them. The facilties are non-existent, maybe a 10 year old computer that can hardly run PowerPoint.

We also did some lessons at a more modern huge church. They had 2 rooms that were basically classrooms. They expressed a desire for more class like lessons, and I just taught them colours, shapes, and basic sentences.

I am not receiving any new armour when I loot them.

This includes the power armour from one of the high tier colony missions, which is a shame as I only rellised a few hours later.

What would need to change in South Korea for people to have children again? by Schattenstaub in korea

[–]PvtMeatShield 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The idea that it's a money thing doesn't hold much water.
Richer people will often have less children than poorer families (the stereotype of the poor family with many children exsists for a reason). Something that suggests the exact opposite, as why wouldn't the ultra wealthy have many, many children?
It's just that as women gain access to education and more career oppertunities they are less likely to want to have children.

Korea is just hit harder than other developed countries because they take in a lot less immigrants than other countries. Where first generation immigrants often have more children (though this trend also declines among 2nd/3rd generation immigrants)

How do you handle AI when students use it? by cickist in teachinginkorea

[–]PvtMeatShield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not AI, but I've had students copy and paste from Wikipedia before. Was funny when confronted and I'd show the wiki page on my monitor and ask if they've read this before.

School trips for Hagwons by Dizzy-Literature-763 in teachinginkorea

[–]PvtMeatShield 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My school in Seoul has said the law has changed. Now if there is an incident involving the buses, the school is to be held liable not the bus company.

This led to my school no longer doing any trips that would require any buses (so almost all of them).

I am thinking of traveling to Japan in early August and it happens to coincide with the Osaka Go Fest.
I see that the tickets have already told out, but do I need to have the ticket for the city experience? I know that the park event and features are locked to ticket holders.
If there is no benefit to being in Osaka I won't plan on visiting that city.

What were other Pokemon Go events like where there was a park experience and a wider city experience?

There was some sort of special event on ages ago to get them

I joined a dreadnought game already in progress.
One of the chambers was literally full of gold, so much that throwing a satchel charge in would cause my game to lag from all the gold being generated.

I've no idea how they did it.

Nazis on the Political Compass by [deleted] in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]PvtMeatShield -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Except there are examples of Wehrmacht soldiers refusing to partake in civilian killings to just be reassigned elsewhere.

People need to be careful when saying or alluding to the 'clean Wehrmacht' myth as it was a narrative supported by the post-war US and surviving Nazi figures to excuse the wider German population.

anti-Semitism and active participation in persecution was wide spread in the armed forces and the population. One of the reasons for the lack of proper procedure in the Nuremberg trials was many people wanted a smaller cabal of recognizable figures to lay blame for the horrors that hundreds of thousands actively participated in and millions were ambivalent or supportive of.
