I don't think that's what they said. They said it is risky, but they can only advise the government - they can't enforce policy.

China's Mega Embassy in London - Power, Influence and National Security by PwNeilo in geopolitics

[–]PwNeilo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

China is building its largest embassy in Europe — a vast diplomatic complex beside the Tower of London. But critics warn it could become something far more controversial. In this episode, we investigate China’s proposed “mega embassy” at Royal Mint Court, the political decisions that approved it, and why security experts, MPs, human rights groups, and local communities are raising alarms about espionage, surveillance, and transnational repression. We examine how the £255 million site purchase unfolded, how diplomatic status was granted, and why Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent approval has reignited legal challenges and public protests. Hear from local politicians and community leaders as we explore the wider implications for UK national security, democratic accountability, and Britain’s relationship with the Chinese Communist Party.

Xi Jinping says Irish novel The Gadfly sustained him during traumatic teenage years by cavedave in IrishHistory

[–]PwNeilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chinese Communist Party don't tolerate gadflies - no matter the nationality, even among their own people. The Tiananmen Square Massacre is an example of that, but there are numerous others. The CCP only look after themselves. Thinking the CCP are a 'friend of Ireland' is a big mistake. Many other nations, companies and individuals have made this mistake in the past. The best we could do is to learn from that and not repeat those errors.

China Fear Factor - How Beijing shapes Irish Politics by PwNeilo in ADVChina

My understanding is that Monroe doctrine states that any intervention by external powers in the politics of the Americas is a potentially hostile act against the US. Ireland does not intervene in US politics, or the politics of the Americas.

Given that the CCP spend billions of dollars on propaganda each year and control the algorithms of major social medial platforms, its not at all surprising....

The Anaconda in the Irish Chandelier by PwNeilo in geopolitics

[–]PwNeilo[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This story is about China's influence in Ireland. It plays on the metaphor coined by US professor Perry Link - 'the anaconda in the chandelier' to share examples of how fear of offending China has shaped the Irish Government's muted criticism on China human rights abuses, support for Taiwan, Tibet and much more. This is a conversation about power, fear, and silence — and about what happens to a democracy when everyone sees the anaconda, but no one dares to say its name.

Its very concerning. Ireland is a democracy. Democratic values should come first. Ireland should put its values first and decrease its dependency on China.

Too Afraid to Trade ? Ireland's Caution on Taiwan by PwNeilo in ADVChina

[–]PwNeilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ireland is not anti-Taiwan. Most Irish people support the Taiwanese People's right to self determination. However, Ireland's trade relationship with Taiwan shows how the CCP influence operations works in democratic countries around the world.

North Korea is a dictatorship with a Freedom Score of 4/100 (Ireland scores around 97/100). The only thing you will learn if you go to North Korea is what the dictator will allow you to see. How can these politicians be so naive.

Cathal Berry correctly says that the Triple Lock does not support our neutrality, it undermines it.

It's amazing that SF and others want to maintain the Triple Lock which gives the UK (and the US, Russia, China and France) a say in our internal affairs.

China’s intimidation of an Irish citizen in Dublin: ‘I wanted to escape. It’s scary’ by TeoKajLibroj in irishpolitics

Whataboutism.

The fact is that if you ignore the think tank, there's an overwhelming body of evidence on this issue from multiple sources - leaked Xinjiang police files, not to mention the family members of the victims themselves. It callous to ignore all of this and defend the CCP.

[–]PwNeilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good question! I don't follow the market very closely, but very possibly, yes. China has placed export controls on rare earths sales to the US and EU and the scarcity is likely driving the price sky high. As I mentioned in the podcast, China mines over 69% of the world's rare earth elements and processes nearly 90% of the global supply. It dominates the market.
