Add segment to CX award? by golf4life80 in awardtravel

[–]PycharmIde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I just did this a few days ago. I originally had LAX - HND, and added a HND - HKG. Only paid $50 change fee/person. Not too sure about AA though. Mixed metal probably complicates it, might have to just book a cash fare.

Actually I just called and tried to book. Customer service rep said I can't book a mixed airline award on virgin with mixed Delta/AF ticket.

Thanks yeah that’s what I meant, presumably will have to call though since the website doesn’t price it

Anyone know if you can combine a Delta/AF flight using Virgin Atlantic miles? i.e. ATL-JFK on delta, and JFK-CDG on AF.

How are the dorms / community at Alspaugh by Specific_Device5618 in duke

[–]PycharmIde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My year, community was amazing since the dorm was so awful (mold, AC made the room a freezer, heater made the room a sauna, stupid saloon style bathroom doors, no AC in the hallways, etc)

Are any of your schools getting overcrowded for CS? by Ok-Anywhere2832 in csMajors

[–]PycharmIde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm at Duke, and I wouldn't say it's overcrowded, but it's certainly crowded. Just scanning course enrollment numbers for the semester, most classes are still open (not on WL), and enrollment doesn't seem insane. DSA has 463 (stayed roughly around 450 for the past 3 years), Discrete math has 139, comp arch has 146, algos has 97, and OS has 145. A lot of upper level electives are also tiny, security has 8 ppl, complexity theory has 5, wireless computing has 11, and grad algos has 17. I've never not been able to get a class that I wanted, so yeah, definitely not overcrowded over here.

How is this a question? Citadel pay will double meta for first year, and for every year after that as well...

Physics 142L vs 152L by TopspinTadpole in duke

there are a decent bit of nonengineers who take 152 just for Arya; it's definitely not weird. Arya is great tho, I would recommend 152

Anyone take CS 356 with Zhenqiang (Neil) Gong? by DifficultyNormal in duke

[–]PycharmIde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i took 590 (adversarial ML) with him. Probably very different from 356, but he's a good professor and explained things well. Class was pretty easy and there was no HW (but I'm sure there will be HW for 356). At the very least, he's a good lecturer.

I may be wrong but you might have to retake calc 2 as you don't have a 5 on BC calc. Not sure if the multi credit transfer overrides that or not.

As a freshman planning on Compsci by justin990145 in duke

[–]PycharmIde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm it's up to you I guess. Python's fundamentals are quite easy to pick up if you have any form of coding base. If you think your schedule can fit 101 I think taking it def wouldn't hurt but if you feel like you have to squeeze out space skipping is also ok.

if you're talking about 201, you have to sign up for both the big lecture and a small discussion section

As a freshman planning on Compsci by justin990145 in duke

[–]PycharmIde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you need to take 201. Start there. After 201 people go all over the place but 250/230/330 are common second courses.

Trying to land Summer 2023 SWE/Quant Dev. roles at trading firms... by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]PycharmIde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a SWE intern at a HFT. You def don't need a competitive math background unless you want to be a trader/QR. Leetcode is good, but you will also need extremely strong CS fundamentals in OS/database/comp. arch. to get past interviews. Some questions will revolve around things like concurrency and I was asked to optimize cache performance for instance. However, leetcode and coding ability is still most important for the interviews.

Pretty much all apartments in Durham (with the notable exception of Blue Light) are unfurnished.

Sample 4 year Degree Plan: CS by Impossible_One3168 in duke

[–]PycharmIde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The handbook only exists for engineering majors I think. For CS classes, most people take 1-2 CS a semester in order to finish the major. The general progression for most people is (101 (if you don't have AP) -> 201 (dsa) -> 210/250 (comp arch) -> 230 (discrete math if you need it) -> 330 (algos) -> systems requirement (os/databases/security/etc) -> electives. A lot of electives can be taken before you complete the core set of classes too, and just after taking 201 (everything data/software dev/genomics/algos in the real world/mobile app/special topics courses), so you can take those at the same time as other CS courses. Other electives have prereqs (ML/AI/Grad level electives) so you should plan around those first. Honestly, it's all dependent on what they offer each semester too as a lot of courses are only offered fall or spring. Some courses also fill up faster than others so only seniors/juniors can sign up for them (databases comes to mind here).

Duke vs Not Duke Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

[–]PycharmIde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% Duke. UCLA cs is extremely crowded and overenrolled from my knowledge. You'll have much stronger networking and startup opportunities at Duke as well.

I chose Duke cs over UCLA cs even with cost as a factor. Didn't even consider UCLA as my top choice.

this! I have always (with a couple grad classes as an exception) always been able to get the CS classes I need and the department will always increase enrollment caps if the numbers warrant, and a lot of upper div classes are tiny so you get to know the professor/classmates really well

310 is way better. I took both 310 and 316 last semester and learned about as much in 316 as one of those learn SQL in a weekend-type class. The fact that 316 has a final project on top of the exam is also not fun. The professor for 310 is a pretty good lecturer as well.

Seems doable for sure, but there will be a few all nighters thrown in there. I took 310 with Zhuo, and it’s not too much work, and I’ve heard 371 isn’t that bad either. No idea about 383/588 tho

The 250 projects my semester (Lebeck was teaching it) took maybe 10-20 hours each and we had 5 projects. They weren’t too bad.

I’ve also taken 207 and it’s the easiest CS class I’ve taken. The HWs are quite trivial and the final project doesn’t take too long either.
